D. H. Lawrence's THE RAINBOW, declared obscene when it was published in 1915, is the passionately written chronicle of three generations of a Nottingham farming family. Tom Brangwen marries a widow named Lydia Lensky; Lydia's daughter Anna marries her cousin Will, a woodcarver, and has a large family. Their daughter, Ursula, leaves their simple rural world and becomes a schoolteacher--much as Lawrence himself did. She falls in love with Anton Skrebensky and, when he is called away to war, responds to an ardent fellow teacher, a feminist and epitome of the "new woman" named Winifred. The struggles of Ursula and her sister Gudrun to find their way in a changing world are continued in Lawrence's WOMEN IN LOVE. Minimize

Long, Repetitive, Yet Likable

by   fixxxerny ,  Feb 14, 2000
Pros: very in depth, sexuality with a tinge of class
Cons: long and repetitive!!!, also racy, may not be appropriate for all
Review: Anyone who has read this book will identify with the title of this review. Many times, a character in "The Rainbow" would say how they could not stand the characteristics of another, yet they wanted to marry, to get to know better, or to be...

The rainbow- an amazing and intriguing novel

by   lilmonkey_3 ,  Nov 9, 2000

Cons: A bit too much detail in some parts and over writing perhaps not needed
Review: Lawrence's writing is neat, precise and enthralling. He tackles issues of sexual orientation, feminism and womanhood with a delicate yet harsh reality that makes the reader want to read on. He deals with these issues about women in a sensitive way, the...
