In Monterey, on the California coast, Sweet Thursday is what they call the day after Lousy Wednesday, which is one of those days that is just naturally bad. Returning to the scene of CANNERY ROW, the weedy lots and junk heaps and flophouses, Steinbeck once again brings to life the denizens of a netherworld of laughter and tears. This novel was made into the musical PIPE DREAM by Rogers and Hammerstein. Minimize

Pros: colorful characters, interesting place
Cons: none
The Bottom Line: Steinbeck at his best!
Review: John Steinbeck's colorful characters and offbeat places come alive for his readers. In Cannery Row he presented us with a group of down and outs who wanted little more out of life than a good time and a stiff drink. A very entertaining book, but Sweet...
