More Painful

by   breakbeet ,  Jun 24, 2009
Pros: Awesome
Cons: Maybe a little slow for YLT eighties fans
The Bottom Line:  One of the best of 00, an indispensible YLT recording, indie recording, and rock 'n roll recording.
Review: One of the finest memories of my childhood was sitting with my two cousins on their back porch. Our parents had been having a yard sale all day. While the adults were folding up plastic tables on the front lawn and resigning 1960s jewelry boxes and 1980s ...

Yo La Tengo Has It (and Their New Album Shows It)

by   zadfrack ,  Mar 27, 2002
Pros: Great indie rock cd.
Cons: n/a
The Bottom Line: You should go and buy this album right now.
Review: This was a review that was written for the Dreher High BluePrint. It first appeared in print on May 26, 2000.

Yo La Tengo (which is Spanish for "I have it" is a three-piece band from Hoboken, New Jersey that consists of James McNew on...

"You don't want to listen, I don't want to shut up"

by   gentlementle ,  Jul 31, 2000
Pros: Understated indie pop at its best
Cons: A bit too "sedated" for some?
Review: Vibrant but subdued soundscapes, complete with atmosphere-inducing vocals and guitars. Quirky lyrics and subjects. Reserved intensity. I guess these are the things that come to mind when I think of Yo La Tengo's newest cd And Then Nothing Turned...

ylt pulls it together

by   boygirlparty ,  Apr 30, 2003
Pros: well-blended harmonies and quiet pauses, the most sophisticated yo la tengo record to date
Cons: paper cd case is annoying, some songs drag on at times
The Bottom Line: it's a mellow listen with a lot of highlights. for someone who loves harmonies and soothing music but isn't afraid to step into a less conservative approach to soft pop.
Review: it's been years, and still i come back to "and then nothing turned itself inside out" as a record i can listen to in any mood. its quiet overtones and moving melodies can relax or soothe any moment - whether driving around in the sun or winding down at...

Yo La Tengo: And then nothing turned itself inside-out

by   dupontrocks ,  Sep 5, 2000
Pros: It's Yo La Tengo
Cons: It's not Pavement
Review: Wow, these old indie Gods can still astound. I'm actually new to the Yo La Tengo sound getting on after the Little Honda ep but I've been listening to Matador forever and Yo La Tengo may be the best band on the label. "And then there was...

the reason of age

by   cbarryslough ,  Jun 14, 2000
Pros: long playing, hypnotic
Cons: not very rockin'
Review: It was quiet out...I had eaten 2 hits of acid about 90 minutes earlier and the effects were becoming quiet apparent. I had just bought the new Yo La Tengo, and decided to give it a spin. I have always been a fan of all things Velvet-ish, and this new...

An evening at home with the Kaplans

by   wysi ,  Feb 6, 2001
Pros: Intimate and hypnotic in places
Cons: Lacks the power of some of their other work
The Bottom Line: Yo La Tengo are great - but they have certainly made better albums than this.
Review: Yo La Tengo are one of America's finest existing bands, and have over the years put together a body of work that, while overlooked by most, certainly stands with the best that indie rock (or indeed any rock) has to offer. Their most recent outing,...
