Where Taxis Fear to Tread

by   jaxmom28 , top reviewer in Books at Epinions.com ,  Dec 6, 2001
Pros: Extraordinary characters, powerful dialog and action
Cons: Dark and brooding, may be too bitter a pill for many readers
The Bottom Line: This powerful, shadowy play takes an unflinching look at the painful and violent degeneration of a woman and her sanity. Love it or hate it, no one feels lukewarm.
Review: " They told me to take a street-car named Desire." - Blanche DuBois

Brutal, dark, nightmarish, a vision of a world without hope, these are the things critics of A Streetcar Named Desire would have readers and audiences believe...

"I don't want realism. I want magic."

by   cholera ,  Jan 10, 2003
Pros: vivid characters, fast and easy to read, heartbreaking
Cons: extremely sad
The Bottom Line: The best play I've ever read, and you can read it within a couple of hours.
Review: Tennessee Williams' Pulitzer Prize winning play tells the story of fading Southern Belle Blanche Dubois and her last attempts for stability and happiness. She's kind of what I imagine Scarlett O'Hara would end up as, penniless and facing middle age. A...

An excellent play

by   mattyd5 ,  Feb 27, 2001
Pros: Easy to read. Not long at all.
Cons: None.
The Bottom Line: Short and easy to understand with a profound theme.
Review: I had heard so much about Tennessee Williams, but never had the chance to read his most famous work, "A Streetcar Named Desire". Luckily, I got the chance when I was pressed for time to read a book on my English class's reading list.

Southern Environment done well

by   airbball23 ,  May 9, 2005
Pros: well written, exciting events.
Cons: They talk to much about how the south is bad.
Review: this book (play) is a very written book about Stanley, Stella and Blanche. It is basically about a sister moving in with her younger sister and bother-in-law, and problems are produced by the brother-in-law (Stanley) and Blanche (Stella's sister). ...

On A Streetcar Going Nowhere

by   jankp ,  Mar 23, 2001
Pros: only 142 pages, dialog, blues atmosphere
Cons: depressing, infuriating treatment of Blanche, ending
The Bottom Line: If you like reading about total tragedy of a sympathetic character, you may revel in this play. I don't.
Review: I don’t know about you, but when I watch (or read) a play, I need at least a slim chance of hope for one of the main characters in the end. Otherwise, the utter despair and frustration they experience will infuriate me and make me wish I’d never seen (or...

This Won A Pulitzer?!

by   LoneWOlf316 ,  Nov 21, 2000
Pros: Closing the book
Cons: Opening the book
Review: I know that I lot of people are gonna hate me for saying this, but "A Streetcar Named Desire" is the worst play I have ever read. The one thing that continued to plague my mind was who the hell thought this play was good enough to receive the...

not worth reading

by   Xena1175 ,  Jan 17, 2000
Pros: I've yet to see any
Cons: depressing, bleak. . .
Review: Maybe this is not the most chic opinion out there, but I did not relish reading this play. I don't care how great Marlon Brando looks on the cover, that is the only selling point I see. A Street Car Named Desire is overall a depressing story. There...
