Sense and Sensibility: A deservedly acclaimed classic |
|||
|
Pros: The style and evocation of a time that demanded civility and good manners.
Cons: Not a one! The language is a tricky at first.
The Bottom Line: The language and style may be hard at first, but stick with it, and you will be rewarded.
Review: Things have been rough lately in my family, and one of the coping skills that I turn to keep my sanity intact is the reading of old favourites. One of the authors that I know that will evoke pleasant memories for me is Jane Austen, a young woman who ...

I am convinced that I shall never see a man whom I can really love! |

|
Pros: an entertaining, moving story and great characters
Cons: could be perceived as over the top
but not by me!
The Bottom Line: Just as worthwhile as Pride and Prejudice. If you can spare the time read it!
Review: For all you macho guys out there who despise chick flicks and think anyone who cries over a book heck, anyone who reads a book is pathetic, you can just huff and puff and deal with it. I really dont care. Because were talking one of my ...

Pros: Wonderful exploration of characters; brilliant dialogue and wit
Cons: Plot drags a bit in final third (but who minds?)
The Bottom Line: Reading Austen..."Is there a felicity in the world...superior to this?"
Review: I'm the youngest of three sisters. Our mannerisms are enough alike that when people meet us for the first time, they're often startled by how much we "look alike" even though there are clear and obvious differences in our appearances. People who know ...

Pros: Great story, well developed characters
Cons: Pretty long, very detailed
Review: Jane Austen's first book, Sense and Sensibility, really shows the differences between classes (rich and poor) in the 1800's. The book, about two sisters trying to marry well, goes on about who the sisters want to be with. This book was my favorite...

Pros: A wonderful romance classic with a realistic English plot.
Cons: The language is a little hard to get used to. Read a little Shakespeare first.
Review: When I was in high school I remember being forced to read Pride & Prejudice in the 10th grade. I am of the opinion that no one under the age of 20 should be forced to read Jane Austen. It took me until about that age to understand, and appreciate...

|
Pros: sympathic and fully-developed characters, a good plot that's easy to understand
Cons: a bit wordy and windy with extremely long periods of descriptions with no conversation
The Bottom Line:
I enjoyed this as my first exposure to Austen's literary works, although some of the stories I've read since I like much more. Review: With all of the adaptations of Jane Austen's novels by Hollywood in the past decade or so, I finally made it a point to begin reading her novels. That's right, through all of high school and college I was never introduced to her novels prior to this. My ...

Pros: Good story
Cons: Length, if pressed for time
Review: Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility wonderfully displays the beginning forms of the novel. Although most men of the eighteenth century deemed the novel as an inferior form of writing, Austen appeals to readers even today with her witticisms and subtle...
