Another good tale from the Master

by   poet831 ,  Mar 27, 2001
Pros: An engrossing tale, weaving Christopher Columbus, to the Andrea Doria, and the Mayan Empire.
Cons: General Cussler formula - you know who is going to win in the end.
The Bottom Line: If you like Cussler - then you're in for a well-woven tale. If you don't - then you'd find nothing to change your mind, in this.
Review: For all the details of the plot, read the reviews by caradoc, ETorrey and Harriet, as they have more than adequately presented synopses of it from various angles. I just found this an incredibly good read ... but then, I'm a Clive Cussler fan, and as...

Following the Dirk Pitt Formula

by   caradoc ,  Sep 12, 2000
Pros: Action. Adventure. Pretty Girls.
Cons: Formulaic. Predictable.
Review: I just finished reading "Serpent," and felt that the entire book was just another one of Cussler's formulaic pieces of schlock action.

Fortunately, I like schlock action novels.

"Serpent" follows Cussler's...

Serpent, Clive Cussler

by   Harriet ,  Jul 10, 1999
Pros: thrilling action-adventure that appeals to both sexes
Cons: characters are a little two dimensional
Review: Marine archeologist Nina Kirov makes a discovery that may expose conclusively who was the first European to arrive in the Americas. However, instead of glory, Nina finds herself in danger as the minions of Texas business mogul Halcon attack her for no...

Dirk Pitt is not dead, just resting!

by   ETorrey ,  Nov 9, 1999
Pros: complicated story line that pulls together in the end
Cons: formula approach to writing (but a winning formula)
Review: Don’t worry, Dirk Pitt is not dead, he is just on temporary hiatus, as it were. Clive Cussler (famous for his best-selling Dirk Pitt series) has teamed with Paul Kemprecos to create a new series of books (“from the NUMA files) staring Kurt Austin.

Who Sunk the Andrea Doria and What Happened to Dirk Pitt?

by   aawehr ,  May 5, 2001
Pros: Action, Adventure, Nice scenes.
Cons: No Dirk Pitt. Formula writing. Didn't buy into the premise.
The Bottom Line: Although a Clive Cussler fan, this Audiotape did not "do it" for me. Too abridged; the story jumps around. A formula plot that I just did not buy into.
Review: After fifteen best sellers, Clive Cussler introduces Kurt Austin, but leaves me wanting Dirk Pitt's return! Kurt, the leader of a courageous National Underwater Marine Association (NUMA) exploration team meets beautiful and intelligent Nina...

Diffusionism Revealed!

by   Nimue ,  Jun 3, 2000
Pros: Nice settings
Cons: Ponderous, slow-moving
Review: OK, it's an interesting premise -- and the theories of diffusionist archeologists have been gaining in respectability recently, so I guess a book about it was inevitable. The basis of the action is that there was contact between the New and Old Worlds...
