Not the volume to buy, but the heart of the heart of the matter

by   Stephen_Murray , top reviewer in Books at Epinions.com ,  Jan 21, 2006
Pros: a great story
Cons: There's much more in Close Range or the Story to Screenplay book
The Bottom Line: I recommend the story, but in other packaging.
Review: Annie Proulx's 1997 New Yorker story occupied only parts of 13 pages in the magazine, but was stretched to 55 pages as a stand-alone book. This is one of the most powerful American short stories ever, in a league with "Big Two-Hearted ...

Homo On The Range : It's a cold wind blowing, and I am scared.

by   randomkill ,  Nov 7, 2004
Pros: This story though short, richly describes a thoroughly believable relationship between two cowboys.
Cons: You should just buy the whole book Close Range : Wyoming Stories
The Bottom Line: What is the “Moral Value” of denying people equal protection of their rights under law?
Review: If they could face it I could take it in their eyes Oh I know I'd make it Their tiny minds And sacred cows just fake it If only then and only then They would understand Elton John - All The Nasties In 1924 the state of Viginia ...

Brokeback Mountain

by   highlandamy ,  Jul 23, 2006
Pros: Great Story. Well Written. Should strike a chord with anyone who had experienced forbidden love.
Cons: Sad. Parts are graphic.
The Bottom Line: I would recommend this short story to people who want to read something great. In my opinion this is an important piece to read.
Review: I was drawn to Brokeback Mountain by my love of both short stories, and Proulx's award-winning novel The Shipping News. Since the release of Ang Lee's film based on the 55 page novella, I've heard Brokeback Mountain referred to as ...

Likely to move you to tears.

by   asifkawloon ,  May 26, 2007
Pros: Fascinating and powerful. Strongly recommended.
Cons: Somemay think that few scenes are too explicit.
Review: This is likely to move you to tears, make you feel like somebody's pulling your guts out hand over hand a yard at a time, as Annie Proulx writes of Ennis. These stories can also make you treasure love more. I can say that Proulx's prose is pure poetry. ...

No Depth

by   jsmorris ,  Oct 10, 2007
Pros: Interesting plot, interesting characters... well what was told of them.
Cons: Not enough details, not enough character development
The Bottom Line: If you only want a "cliff notes" type of book this is the one for you. For those that want more information, find a different book.
Review: I’m often accused of living in the dark ages. It’s not so much as living in the dark ages, it’s that my life is so busy that I don’t get to watch movies often. Between school, my daughter, work, and coaching swimming the little bit of ...
