Romero's Original Dawn of the Dead (1978)

by   lambchops ,  Sep 13, 2004
Pros: Fantastic, socially conscious story...
Cons: Maybe a *bit* corny...
The Bottom Line: This is one movie that has stood the test of time. Romero proves that "zombie horror" can be much more than just splat.
Review: “When there is no more room in hell, the dead will walk the Earth.” This quote from main character and former Philadelphia SWAT team member Peter Washington (Ken Foree) is the best summarization of George Romero’s classic Dawn of ...

Pros: Fantastic script, great direction, solid performances
Cons: none
Review: Dawn of the Dead: Laurel Group/ Anchor Bay Entertainment

Dawn Of The Dead *

by   brodieman ,  Oct 31, 2002
Pros: Socio-Political satire and gore by the veritable bucketload.
Cons: Long, drawn out stretches may test some viewers.
The Bottom Line: Excessively bleak horror tale where the wit and satire is every bit as biting as the legion of carnivorous flesh eaters that shuffle through Romero's hellish shopping mall.
Review: Zombie fans haven’t had much to celebrate of late; after a deluge of unimaginative direct-to-video pap and the huge letdown of the promising but immensely disappointing Resident Evil, a further mainstream visit from the un-dead would seem positively...

A special review of DAWN OF THE DEAD: THE ULTIMATE EDITION DVD set (Part 1).

by   deadmilkboy , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Sep 9, 2004
Pros: A funny, intense, gory little B-movie that utilizes Romero's knack for splatter and satire.
Cons: The acting is often minimalist and the satire hasn't aged that well.
The Bottom Line: DAWN has finally made it to "Ultimate Edition" status, and never has consuming been so bloody good. The movie itself remains a must-see for any budding horror fan.
Review: First off is some news about the Romero zombie trilogy that might make you happy or it might depress you to tears. First off is that Romero's fourth supposed installment in the series, "Land of the Dead," is finally set to come out sometime in 2005, as ...

When there's no more room in hell, the dead will go shopping

by   st_patrick , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Feb 18, 2007
Pros: Social satire, biblical allusions, tongue-in-cheek humour.
Cons: Extreme gore.
The Bottom Line: A brutal horror film, and a sharp social satire.
Review: The first time I saw George A. Romero's "Dawn of the Dead", the first thing I noticed was how graphically violent it was. Having enjoyed his previous zombie epic, "Night of the Living Dead", I thought I was prepared for the sequel. Boy was I wrong. ...

Trapped at the Mall and the Dead Want a Refund: This is Hell

by   Furie , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  May 30, 2001
Pros: Tense action, good realistic character interaction, Tom Savini's FX
Cons: Repetitious, maybe? Do you get tired of splattered brains?
The Bottom Line: Buddy, if you want a top-notch zombie flick that won't dumb it down or contrive, I got your movie right here.
Review: In a film whose primary conflict is an epidemic of zombies, it's rather remarkable that the primary strength of George Romero's Dawn of the Dead is that most of the tension comes from people interacting with other people. The zombies merely cut...

Dawn of the Dead - furthering the Zombie Agenda

by   j-bar ,  Jun 15, 2009
Pros: story, pace, zombies, gore
Cons: pedestrian acting, dated effects and makeup, overt social messages
The Bottom Line: Dawn of the Dead - a milestone in horror that sets the standard for zombie movies to this day
Review: George A. Romero is the father of the modern zombie movie. His Night of the Living Dead, a black-and-white film made on a shoestring budget by Romero and his friends in Western Pennsylvania, was released to an unsuspecting nation in 1968 and went on to ...

The Dead will walk the Earth

by   Augdawg ,  Sep 28, 2004
Pros: One of the best Zombie flicks of all time.
Cons: A movie like this spawns many bad copies.
The Bottom Line: The true Zombie movie that even by todays standards still outshines them all!
Review: Funny note before I start my review on the classic "Dawn of the Dead", I actually saw the remake of "Dawn of the Dead" before I saw the original. Now that I've seen both I can honestly say that any horror movie fan that wants to see these movies will be ...

Forget nuclear weapons. This is next.

by   thewasp ,  Jun 12, 2002
Pros: The gun/pie/seltzer water fight scene between the Hell's Angels and the zombies.
Cons: To really enjoy this movie, you almost have to have lived in Pennsylvania.
The Bottom Line: Contrary to what the song says, everyone is not happy when the dead come home. . .except horror movie fans, anyway.
Review: Hearing gunfire coming from the TV screen, my mother tried to lean around the corner of the kitchen. Recognizing the green hills of Pennsylvania, she then asked me, "What war is this?" to confirm her suspicion that I had rented "Gettysburg." Doing my...
