by   patdog ,  Aug 16, 2000
Pros: longevity, durability, very reliable
Cons: accessories not so good
Review: My family bought a 1988 Dodge Caravan brand spankin new in 1987. I was only 9 years old. In its early years we took the van everywhere. We took the van on a 4 week trip cross country, driving over 10,000 miles in this period of time. We also drove...

11 years and still going strong!

by   janinpb ,  Jan 22, 2000
Pros: 7 passenger; dependable
Cons: Can't think of any
Review: We purchased our Dodge Caravan (SE MODEL) in January 1989. It's a 1988 model. It's the short version and for a family of six wasn't any too big. We bought it when our children were from ages 8 to 14. It's been a working horse for us. We have 220,000...

'88 and Still Runs Great

by   bj108423 ,  May 5, 2000
Pros: Runs great, competitive gas mileage, roomy
Cons: Removal of back seat requires 2 strong people
Review: We purchased a previously owned 1988 Dodge Caravan a little over a year ago. It had 37k original miles! The owner was an elderly gentleman who used the vehicle to go back and forth to work - which was a mile down the road from him!

It is the...

You can keep the new ones.

by   momwitch ,  Dec 31, 1999
Pros: Size, comfort, ease of driving
Cons: I had to buy a console for between the seats.
Review: My Grand Caravan is an '88. Big, boxy, fake wood panels. And I love it. I've only had it a year, and have never before loved a car as much as this one. It has room, everything is handy, and it's a joy to drive. I drove a stick shift for almost 40...

We loved our Caravan

by   Plantldy ,  Feb 27, 2000
Pros: roomy, easy to drive and see out of
Cons: make sure you get comfortable seats
Review: We bought this vehicle because it was affordable to us at the time and we had been looking for something comfortable for our family. I loved the roominess of it and how easy it was to drive. The reason I speak in past tense is because someone smashed...

Hot under the collar

by   thrillride11 ,  Oct 16, 2004
Pros: Roomy, comfortable ride, adjusters for rear windows, tinted glass and air conditioner has been problem free.
Cons: Cooling system, underpowered, poor gas mileage, no rear heat or air.
The Bottom Line: There must be a design flaw with the Mitsubishi V6 cooling system. Many first generation Caravan owners seem to have the same problem.
Review: Update (Oct.19th). We have decided NOT to put the $3,000 which my mechanic is quoting for a complete rebuild into Ruby our 17 year old minivan. Instead we will be on the lookout for a '96 or newer Grand..extra room with a more reliable 3.3 liter. The 3.0 ...

A wonderful van overall

by   bigericred ,  Sep 15, 2000
Pros: The amount of things you can haul in this van is amazing
Cons: aluminum motor parts
Review: We own a tan dodge Caravan. Its a really nice van, that rides well. But we have had trouble with the engine. If we have it worked on the bolts keep breaking off in the engine because its aluminium. And with it being a foreign engine its hard to get...

When it Runs

by   bostwick ,  Oct 17, 1999
Pros: Seating and cargo capacity, power
Cons: Unreliable and expensive to maintain
Review: Back in 1993, I bought a used 1988 Caravan because I needed something with cargo space and towing capacity. The problems began almost before I started making payments. The first sign of trouble was rapid wear on the front tires, caused by loose front...
