I Wanted to Be Tony Alva

by   teamfreak16 ,  Mar 19, 2003
Pros: Allows 70's era skaters to re-visit their past.
Cons: To me, none.
The Bottom Line: I might be a bit biased based on my past, but I love this DVD.
Review: I loved this DVD, and for very personal reasons. You see, at one time, back in the 70's when the Z-Boys were doing their thing, I was that little 12 year old skateboard punk who religiously read each issue of Skateboarder Magazine. And the Dogtown boyz...

Skateboarding begins

by   evanj18 ,  Oct 31, 2005
Pros: Well done, interesting information
Cons: Not for someone who doesnt allready have an interest in skateboarding
Review: They were the ones who really made it big and changed the face of the industry. Stacy Peralta directs this awesome depiction of the kids who raised out of the poverty of Venice beach. Venice beach was a huge amusement park and overnite abandoned. ...

Captivating. It'll make you want to skate!

by   skack ,  Mar 15, 2007
Pros: Perfect.
Cons: None.
Review: This DVD rules. It captures the true spirit of surfing and skating. It truly is a work of art. It made me feel like a kid again. The Dogtown history is one of those things that has been surrounded by rumor and speculation for decades. These guys ...

Very Good Documentary

by   thuwun11 ,  Feb 1, 2005
Pros: Very good educational documentary. Real life accounts. Great photos and clips.
Cons: Some offensive language
Review: The fall and rise of skateboarding. A group of surfers from Santa Monica California start to skateboard after the surfing tides stop and there is nothing much they can do. They started skateboarding just to practice surfing in the evening and then it ...

California's Z-Boys Reinterpret Skateboarding

by   lambchops ,  Mar 10, 2003
Pros: Highly entertaining "historical" account of the rise of skateboarding
Cons: Obviously biased
The Bottom Line: A compelling, entertaining, educational documentary about the innovation of skateboarding in the 1970's. Highly recommended viewing.
Review: I like a good documentary. One that tells a story, educates, and enlightens is hard to come by. Not to mention the fact that very few have a compelling soundtrack and feature truly exciting things on the screen. I’d heard good things about the...

More advertisement than documentary

by   konky2000 ,  Oct 6, 2002
Pros: Great depiction of late 70's style and attitude.
Cons: A little self-serving at times.
The Bottom Line: Pretty to look at, but a severe conflict of interest between filmmaker and subject matter, makes the film unnecessarily untrustworthy.
Review: A great collection of old school footage almost feels wasted in this documentary that unfortunately lacks a sense of objectivity from its filmmakers.

The title of the film refers to a run down section of Venice Beach, CA referred to as...

Skateboarding Started in Dogtown

by   jas25 ,  Jun 9, 2002
Pros: Fantastic original footage and editing.
Cons: Once the movie is over, it's over, there's not much to think about.
The Bottom Line: In the end I would recommend this film to anyone who enjoys skateboarding, it is a must for all fans.
Review: Dogtown and Z-Boys is a documentary about the skateboarding scene that started in southern California in the mid-70's about how it revolutionized the sport. The movie follows the early careers of most of the original Z-Boys (from the Zephyr skate team)....

Be cool, for an hour

by   dwynne ,  Dec 16, 2003
Pros: subject, cinematography, the competition
Cons: goes on too long, lots of gratuitous MTV camerawork
The Bottom Line: a history of skateboarding and skateboard (counter) culture, for the teenager in all of us. great cinematography, interesting heroes.
Review: I've never surfed or skateboarded, so call this a vicarious adventure. The film had played locally as a midnight movie, which made me really curious to see it. A documentary about inarticulate skateboarders? Loop de loop de loop, or so I imagined, about ...

woah stacy peralta is soooo coool

by   kevinlane ,  Apr 13, 2004
Pros: cool music, cool old videos
Cons: old guys bragging on how awesome they used to be
Review: ok, i will agree that the z-boys had a significant impact on skateboarding, but this is pretty much stacy peralta bragging for what seemed to be hours. and the fact that sean penn doesnt seem to be verry interested in narating this never ending pile of ...

Dogtown: Really worth buying?

by   legolasfire ,  Mar 15, 2003
Pros: Informative, interesting
Cons: Seems to be a bit biased, boring
The Bottom Line: DVD - Oh! a new frisbee! VHS - He shoots! *goes into trash can* YES! He scores!
Review: I admit, it was a very informative look into the golden years of skateboarding. But how much do you want to know? What is the point of knowing how a group of skaters grew up and then finally ended up? I, personally, don't see much of a point in watching...
