Another Altman Gem to the T !!!

by   ChrisJarmick , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Oct 16, 2000
Pros: Altman at his best, working from a script with some wonderful observations.
Cons: A couple of scenes that don't quite work.
Review: Robert Altman's latest is a deceptively simple, yet busy, multi-layered, character study of a Truffaut-like character (the Man who Loved Women) who has become almost a martyr to the women that surround him. He loves his wife too much, he's successful...

Don't bring your usual expectations and experience a hell of a film

by   samadhi ,  Mar 31, 2001
Pros: Relaxed acting; relaxed atmosphere; episodic nature; open-ended; unpredictable
Cons: Richard Gere's sterile suaveness can get extremely annoying
The Bottom Line: Definitely an excellent film, if not a 'great one' & actually quite a lot better than 99.9% of the films out there. Not your usual film but who wants that?
Review: It’s been quite a while since I’ve seen a more charmingly unusual, off-beat, well-acted (that’s right, and who cares if Gere’s Texas accent isn’t authentic; how many non-Texans DO get a friggin' Texas accent right anyway?! He’s perfect for the role in...

Robert Altman on estrogen

by   Chad9976 ,  Mar 16, 2008
Pros: Outstanding cast and performances; interesting screenplay; many funny moments.
Cons: Many melodramatic and surreal moments that seem out of place.
The Bottom Line: This is a movie that walks a VERY fine line between chick flick and comedy, fortunately, it errs on the side of comedy.
Review: As a film critic you're sometimes faced with the dilemma of giving a movie a good review even when you know you could fault it for many things. I'm in such a situation right now with this review of "Dr. T and the Women," a dramedy by veteran filmmaker ...

Dr. T & the Women

by   xiibaro ,  May 11, 2001
Pros: Robert Altman keeps this as a delightful little film.
Cons: It's Altman-lite, at best.
The Bottom Line: With Dr. T & the Women, Robert Altman furthur proves that he is the king of making movies with ensemble casts.
Review: (Dir: Robert Altman, Starring Richard Gere, Helen Hunt, Laura Dern, Farrah Fawcett, Shelley Long, Tara Reid, Kate Hudson, Liv Tyler, Lee Grant, Robert Hays, Matt Malloy, Andy Richter, Janine Turner, Gail Cronauer, Wren Arthur, Irene Cortez, Mackenzie...

Taking women for granted

by   timyang ,  Jul 10, 2001
Pros: Well-crafted film-making.
Cons: Difficult to see beyond its stereotypes of women as neurotic creatures.
The Bottom Line: Watch it with a fan of Altman movies. Let him explain it to you.
Review: Uh, don't talk to me. I've just had an overdose of women. Gotta go do some manly things now like going to the gym and working out.

Uh, uh, uh.

Sweat, sweat, sweat.

That's much better. I was absolutely confused over Robert...

Altman knows his Women

by   sarahgee ,  Nov 18, 2000
Pros: Well-cast and well-acted
Cons: Almost too out-there
Review: I went to see this movie because Robert Altman intrigues me, and (though I'm not usually a Gere fan) the cast sounded outstanding. I wasn't expecting to love the movie, but I knew it would be entertaining. Altman's films sometimes deal with subjects I...

My Wife Thinks I'm her Brother!

by   WBDBaj ,  Feb 17, 2001
Pros: Look at your own life and the people and their problems. What a hoot!
Cons: Presents women in a sexist way
The Bottom Line: See this movie but be prepared for the confused feeling it leaves you. You cannot hear some of the lines in the beginning.
Review: This movie begins in a very confused and almost hens-in-the-barnyard way, with women congregating and complaining about how long they have been waiting in the gynecologist's office. But, these women are superbly and richly dressed, and in fact, so is...

Doctor's Orders

by   pmills1210 , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Oct 15, 2000
Pros: Helen Hunt, Farrah Fawcett, Shelley Long
Cons: Film is sometimes too busy
Review: Dr. T & The Women is a funny and sad look at a man and the relationships at the women in his life. Dr. T is Sully Travis (Richard Gere), a successful Dallas gynecologist who is juggling a lot of balls at all times. Patients always fill his...

Stick with Short Cuts

by   energy81 ,  Dec 3, 2000
Pros: Gere is actually good, unpredictable
Cons: lots of extraneous characters and exhaustingly long scenes
Review: I will always see a Robert Altman film (except Ready to Wear. I believe he has a knack for bringing out the best in even the least talented actor (witness Andie McDowell in Short Cuts) and can turn minor details of everyday life into...

The Unfair Sex

by   jeffcoffy ,  Oct 13, 2000
Pros: Has that pure Altman style
Cons: a bit loopy and misogynist
Review: It begins in an unbelievable cacophony; a tempest of noise. Those of us who like to read opening credits are distracted by the overwhelming sound of the waiting room. All these women, many blonde, most rich, and all Texans, are waiting to see one man:...
