Can a remake improve on the original? You Judge!

by   isinga ,  Nov 23, 2000
Pros: The chemistry between Wayne, Mitchum, and Caan
Cons: Uncomfortably similar to Rio Bravo
Review: The original, in this case, was Rio Bravo, starring John Wayne, written by Leigh Brackett, and directed by Howard Hawks. Wayne had the assistance of Dean Martin as the town drunk, Walter Brennan as the town curmudgeon, and Ricky Nelson as the...

This is THE western

by   FutherMucker ,  Apr 1, 2000
Pros: John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, James Caan's hat. Unusually vulnerable heroes, great dialogue.
Cons: Maybe Wayne's love interest was not great idea. James Caan's hat.
Review: It's a rainy Sunday afternoon. The only thing on TV is an old western starring John Wayne (as always) and Robert Mitchum. Worth a watch then. Oh, Yes! This is the greatest western ever. Sure it is just another John Wayne vehicle but Robert Mitchum and...

Ride, Boldly, Ride: El Dorado

by   George_Chabot , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Jun 22, 2005
Pros: John Wayne, Robert Mitchum, supporting cast, Direction, Cinematography
Cons: Why can't they make films like this today?
The Bottom Line: El Dorado is a fine effort from the team of Howard Hawks and John Wayne. Quality entertainment worth watching for the entire family.
Review: El Dorado (1966) "I'm lookin' at a tin star with a... drunk pinned to it." Cole Thornton When you team up one of my favorite directors with a favorite actor and a good story you have the makings of a film worth watching. The ...

The great geriatric Western

by   Stephen_Murray , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Dec 8, 2001
Pros: Robert Mitchum acting, John Wayne hobbling, a villainous Ed Asner
Cons: slow-building, Michele Cary's part
The Bottom Line: Old pros (in every sense) in wry communication flying above standard-issue plot of virtue against well-armed greed.
Review: Howard Hawks, John Ford, Alfred Hitchcock, and Orson Welles were the American directors around whom the director as auteur dogma was built by French critics of the 1950s (who then became the nouvelle vague directors). Hawks was an extraordinarily...

Ride Bravely, Ride

by   GePop ,  Oct 23, 2000
Pros: A great primer for viewers who want to learn about the Duke
Cons: Might seem a bit static and slow to viewers used to fast paced action
Review: When most people think about a "John Wayne Western," they usually don't immediately recall such films as The Searchers, Hondo, She Wore A Yellow Ribbon, or True Grit, possibly because these classics really transcend the Western...

A Classically done western!

by   hestand ,  Dec 26, 1999
Pros: Great western
Cons: Wayne's leading lady lacked believability.
Review: This western quite vividly mocked Rio Bravo however, because of the great combination in casting, it came off as another great Wayne flick. And who would have believed that Robert Mitchum could have come off as such a great drunk? He was superb.
