Covert Mission - well, Almost: The Horse Soldiers |
|||||||||
|
Pros: John Wayne, William Holden, Direction, Story
Cons: Typical Ford criticisms, sentimentality, obligatory romance, bursts of song, but many favor his idiosyncrasies
The Bottom Line: A hard hitting Civil War cavalry picture starring John Wayne and William Holden, directed by the immortal John Ford. Any questions?
Review: The Horse Soldiers (1959) "Oh come now, Colonel, a man with a great big frame like yours cant just nibble away like a little ole titmouse. Now, what was your preference, the leg or the breast?" Hannah Hunter This is a John Ford cavalry ...

William Holden Does Not See Eye-to-Eye With John Wayne in The Horse Soldiers |
|||
|
Pros: William Holden, John Wayne, has all the elements that fans of director Ford will enjoy.
Cons: Too silly and comic at times for those who want something more "serious" in tone.
The Bottom Line: Not a masterpiece, but a very good film from John Ford.

Cons: Historical revisionism.
The Bottom Line: If you can overlook the dated aspects of the movie, you'll enjoy this.
Review: Horse Soldiers is not a great movie but if you're looking to escape or if the weather outside is frightful, it can be entertaining. John Wayne is the star and plays himself to the hilt. William Holden is his smiling, dapper self, playing his Born...

Pros: OK John Ford time-waster with Wayne and Holden
Cons: Not up to Ford's usual quality
The Bottom Line: One would expect a litle more from a combination of Wayne, Holden and Ford; that's still saying a lot, though. Kill a couple of hours with it.
Review: On the heels of great films like The Quiet Man and Mister Roberts, John Ford closed out the 1950 ...
