Belle and Sebastian: Certainly Not Sinister |
|||
|
Pros: Amazing lyrics, melody, musicianship, and vocals. A flawless performance.
Cons: ...
The Bottom Line: Belle and Sebastian makes music that is so good it hurts. And If You're Feeling Sinister is the band's best work to date.
Review: Relaxed, easy, appealing, and unquestionably fascinating Scottish indie popsters Belle and Sebast ...

Pros: Ten wonderful songs; a moving collection of tunes from a wonderful band
Cons: Not any
The Bottom Line: This is the best record by Belle & Sebastian ever recorded and has yet to be bettered. Their finest studio release still to date.
Review: It can be galling to write reviews of classic albums and do them justice. I usually avoid if I can these wonderful records, as very often their legendary status and obvious quality speaks for itself. Still, if one cant just state the obvious and ...

Pros: Great songs; intelligent, touching lyrics; diverse arrangements; an indie pop masterwork.
Cons: Nothing. Absolutely nothing.
The Bottom Line: One of alternative music's finest hours. Full of exceptional songs. Impossible not to love.
Review: Although this was, in actuality, the second album by Glasgow's indie popsters Belle and Sebastian, for most of the world, it was their first glimpse at the group. Their first album, the small masterpiece Tigermilk, was only printed in a 1,000 copy ...

Pros: Beautiful and Brilliant
Cons: Track 1
Review: From the moment I heard Belle and Sebastian's second album, If You're Feeling Sinister( which was the first album, actually, available in wide distribution), I was hooked. Who was this incredible band with the catchy yet haunting melodies and...

Pros: Moving, Mellow, Amazingly Interesting
Cons: Hasn't gained mainstream success yet
Review: "Here on my own now after hours / Here on my own now on a bus / Think of it this way / You could either be successful or be us / With our winning smiles, and us / With our catchy tunes, and us / Now we're photogenic / You know, we don't stand a...

Pros: Excellent songwriting, beautiful melodies
Cons: This will definitely go over a few heads
Review: The sophomore effort from this Scottish octet pulls you in immediately with its superb lyrics and lilting melodies. Setting it apart instantly, If You're Feeling Sinister champions the underdog while offering a panoramic view of the dejected and...

Pros: Subtle, mature songwriting with a beautiful sound.
Cons: It had to end sometime.
Review: I can't find a less-than-stellar song on this album. From the first quiet guitar strums of "The Stars of Track and Field" and the sweet vocals of shy janitor-turned-frontman, Stuart Murdoch, "If You're Feeling Sinister" unfurls some...

Pros: it's beautiful and catchy
Cons: nope
The Bottom Line: This album is wonderful and is essential to any record collection.
Review: This album is wonderful. It is beautiful and sweet. The melodies are catchy and stay stuck in your head for days.
This album has many of my favorite B&S songs. "Seeing Other People" questions relationships, something everyone can relate... |

Pros: Will raise your expectations of your pop icons, along with your seratonin levels.
Cons: The performing, recording, and releasing of this type of music is better left in the hands of qualified professionals.
Review: Really, it's quite obvious. Belle and Sebastian's If You're Feeling Sinister (1997) contains some of the riskiest pop music made in the 1990s. Serious flirtations with folk music, poetry, and "artistic intent", by rigorous examples of certain...

Pros: Sensitive, beautiful songwriting
Cons: I can't think of any
Review: THE STARS OF TRACK AND FIELD
Subject: sex/promiscuity. Starts quietly, then builds slowly, getting more and more loud and intense. Full of witty lyrics, e.g. "And now he's throwing discus for Liverpool and Widnes" and "But when... |
