Great HD for the Money

by   hotshotmedic ,  Jul 12, 2003
Pros: Fast, Quiet, Looks Cool!
Cons: None so far, wish it had an 8mb cache instead of 2mb
The Bottom Line: Great harddrive, I would've paid full price even if the rebates weren't being offered, its that good!
Review: I picked up this hard drive from best buy for $40 after mail in rebates. It was replacing my old maxtor 30gig with 512kb cache. Upon opening the box I was impressed by the look of the harddrive, it was about 1/2 inch thinner than my old one and was...

bit noisy...

by   purpleroba ,  Jan 18, 2005
Pros: reasonably priced (as of 1/18/05), nice support
Cons: high-pitch noise
The Bottom Line: Good price, and reliable, but my drive produces high-pitch noise...
Review: I bought the drive three weeks ago for my back up. Soon after I start using it, I noticed a high pitch noise coming from my computer. I checked CPU and case fan just in case, but it was coming from the drive. It was not accessing noise, and pretty ...

Dying a painful death

by   wandie ,  Jan 26, 2005
Pros: Its still under warranty! Plus it still works fine as a non essential temp drive.
Cons: It lasted only a year and a half before problems showed up.
Review: My drive is currently in its death throes as I type this. According to WinXP and Win2K, it has bad sectors popping up, unrepairable errors across all partitions and other ugly stuff. But some how it still manages to boot up! To be fair I've been ...

computer illiterate reviews her hard drive

by   inisfad ,  Jan 9, 2007
Pros: Um, er, well, uh, nice and shiny looking?
Cons: Slow, unreliable, unpredictable, noisy.
Review: I know nothing about computers, and when buying my last one, found that I had this Maxtor hard drive in it. Is it responsible for all these freezing programs, slow computing, noise, system failure, etc.? As I read on, it apparently is. This may be ...

Great drive... if they pay you to take it!

by   aparadis ,  Apr 18, 2005
Pros: 1. The drives only cost us about $40 per year - OUCH!!!
Cons: A 40% failure rate in less than 30 months?!
Review: About 2-1/2 years ago, I replaced the computers in our computer lab at our school by building new machines with my classes. It was a great learning experience for them, and several have gone on to build their own home machines. Now to the Maxtor ...

Don't buy

by   mening ,  Dec 3, 2006
Pros: Disk makes a nice shiny paperweight. You can pry out a really strong cool magnet.
Cons: Less reliable than the infamous IBM deskstar from a couple of years back.
Review: Tried to use these as cheap boot/swap drives in a 12 node cluster about a year ago. I have a stack of 4 dead disks, and judging by the sounds I hear from some, that will score rise ...

Horrible Drive

by   stewiesms ,  Apr 26, 2006
Pros: Cheap
Cons: Dies after two years
Review: Have about 110 of these drives, about 15 of them have died. The drives are out of HP DC5100 PCs and has been a nightmare replacing these things. ...

pain pain pain

by   ruudje1 ,  Mar 17, 2005
Pros: none
Cons: it is dead
Review: I bought a Maxtor 40GB hard drive in the Netherlands in 2003, just to take some memorable files and a bunch of MP3s to the USA with me. Now it is March 2005, my wife put all her vital data on the same drive (40GB so what the heck...), and since last ...

Waste of metal

by   teddaniels ,  Feb 24, 2005
Pros: Cheap
Cons: Everything else about it
Review: This drive is a complete waste of metal. Bought it brand new and in the box from a friend at a reduced price, luckily, because the drive does not work at all. After some research I discovered that this particular model is prone to firmware failure. DO ...
