Are We Witnessing the Rebirth of R&B Across the Pond – Part II?

by   vemartin ,  Feb 12, 2005
Pros: Lyrics, music, and oh yes Joss Stone’s beautiful, sultry, spirit-laden.
Cons: None
The Bottom Line: Mind, Body & Soul is a soulful sophomoric release for Joss Stone. R&B lives within this young lady from Devon England and I for one am glad it does.
Review: One of my favorite genres of music Rhythm & Blues (R&B) is going through a revival of sorts. When I was going through my teens in the 70’s, groups like The Commodores, Ohio Players, and my beloved Earth, Wind & Fire—a group I still ...

Joss Stone’s drivin’: Don’t cha wanna ride?

by   Monnie1976 ,  Nov 7, 2004
Pros: Great voice doing something different, some excellent songs
Cons: A few songs sound alike, the hidden track is personal but a little overwrought
The Bottom Line: Joss Stone is a singer gaining momentum and by the time she reaches her third album she will be unavoidable. She has lots of talent and a big future
Review: Joss Stone just might have been one of the most surprising artists in 2003. While her other good-looking, blonde hair blue eye contemporaries were lining up to fall in their perspective niches or categories Joss Stone bucked the sorting system and came ...

This Stone Floats To The Heavens on a Wing, a Prayer and a Voice

by   insomniac1587 , top reviewer in Music at Epinions.com ,  Jun 30, 2005
Pros: finally co-writes, awesomely mature vocals, gorgeous production, some real soul
Cons: long winded, could turn off fans of her debut, not much lyrical substance
The Bottom Line: Soul is in the eye of the beholder.
Review: Despite what some people say to the contrary, teenagers don’t get any respect in most fields one can think of. Either they’re considered to be poor decision makers, they’re told they don’t have enough life experience to know about anything or they’re ...

So Much For Classic Soul

by   kia1984 ,  Oct 18, 2004
Pros: Joss's talent is still there, the songs are catchy, soulful, and have substance
Cons: it's too much like every other R&B release
The Bottom Line: I recommend this album because it's some of the best R&B music to come out recently.
Review: On her debut album, THE SOUL SESSIONS, British teen Joss Stone recorded an album of scorching R&B classics. On her follow up "MIND, BODY, & SOUL", she retreats to the same formulaic contemporary R&B that she was originally an alternative to. I ...

Joss Stone – Changing the world

by   tnon ,  Oct 12, 2004
Pros: Stone's voice and individuality; LP offers good a variety
Cons: No major cons... additional tracks maybe.
The Bottom Line: Stone is surely a talent that can only expand and offer the music world some of the substance it's missing.
Review: S-Curve Records releases Joss Stone’s "sophomore" album Mind, Body, & Soul after her surpassing debut cover The Soul Sessions. The LP is slated with esteemed production contributions, Stone's co-written lyrics, and an undefined ...

Mind, Body & Soul ... enriched

by   goldmemba ,  Feb 19, 2005
Pros: A lot of understatement, good lyrics, beautiful melodies, good flow of the album
Cons: Her voice could still be better used, too much similarity in instruments
The Bottom Line: A very good investment in soul enrichment
Review: My initial reaction to the whole 'Joss Stone hype' was sceptism (as is always with any new 'movement'). But I really couldn't deny her unique and authentic take on the White Stripes 'Fell In Love With A Boy'. The follow up single 'Supa Dupa Love' grew ...

Joss Stone: Her Soul Is Slowly Catching Up To Her Mind & Body

by   speeddemon531 , top reviewer in Music at Epinions.com ,  Sep 25, 2004
Pros: The girl can sing. And "Less is More" is the hotness.
Cons: Do not operate machinery when parts of this album are playing. May cause drowsiness.
The Bottom Line: Better-than-average voice. Less-than-average material at times. Yeah, I guess it works out to be a total average experience. Recommended with caution.
Review: You can definitely say that Joss Stone is an anomaly. How many 17 year old British girls would have the balls to tackle an Aretha song? Her debut EP, "The Soul Sessions" was a left-field success, selling 3/4 of a million copies with no radio play. The ...

Half Excellent Material, Half Killing Time

by   nlawr54761 ,  Jun 30, 2005
Pros: first half is excellent; her soulful voice; songwriting's not half-bad
Cons: loses momentum fast; fillers; the usual 'neo-soul' album
The Bottom Line: ...
Review: Joss Stone is one of those young artists that you watch for because of her very soulful voice. I knew this girl had something when I woke up one morning hearing Fell In Love With A Boy. She released a cover album that was somewhat-successful. So ...

You Had Me, But You Lose Me In Places Too

by   dbcint ,  Jun 9, 2005
Pros: Right To Be Wrong, You Had Me, a couple of other great tracks.
Cons: A little unbalanced. Not a lot of replayability. More could be done with this voice.
The Bottom Line: Great voice, mediocre album.
Review: This is the first entry into my Bro ken Format W/O. This review will be written in the form of a letter to the artist. Dear Ms Stone, Firstly, my apologies. When you first came onto the music scene in early ...
