Alfred Hitchcock's Mr. And Mrs. Smith: An American Screwball Comedy~

by   jankp , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Mar 5, 2006
Pros: Lombard; Montgomery; fun dialogue
Cons: Raymond; dragged a bit
The Bottom Line: The DVD had an analysis with Robert Jordan, Peter Bogdanovich and Hitch's daughter.
Review: I was put off from watching this 1941 comedy a few years ago when I read member eplovejoy’s review of it. His two-star rating really disappointed me because I have enjoyed almost all of Alfred Hitchcock’s movies (Family Plot, his last, ...

Mr. & Mrs. Smith Makes Marriage a Sexy Proposition

by   ispeakup ,  Sep 24, 2001
Pros: Lombard and Montgomery are a Perfect Comedy Team.
Cons: That Lombard's Comedic Genius was so Short-Lived.
The Bottom Line: Lombard and Montgomery were a great pair in this film, furthermore placing Lombard as tops in her comedic craft.
Review: For me, personally, “Mr. & Mrs. Smith” launched my appreciation of the careers of Robert Montgomery and Carole Lombard. I remember watching the 1941 film in the 1970s, thoroughly delighting in the crispness of the black and white comedy. My...

by   panguitch , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Sep 27, 2005
Pros: Acting. Music.
Cons: Overdrawn.
The Bottom Line: Hitchcock shows he can do comedy. But not nearly as well as suspense.
Review: "Hi honey, I picked up a DVD. Mr. and Mrs. Smith." My wife turned to face me and the room went dark. I glanced at the window, expecting storm clouds. But the temperature change was radiating from Mrs. Panguitch. "We’re not watching ...

Why Alfred Hitchcock is not the King of Comedy

by   eplovejoy , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  May 8, 2003
Pros: Carole Lombard, Gene Raymond in too small a part
Cons: Robert Montgomery, dull and mostly leaden story
The Bottom Line: Almost nothing amusing comes of a couple's discovery that they are not legally married. The would-be screwball comedy is about 90 minutes long, but it feels at least twice that.
Review: Carole Lombard sparkled. Her beauty and the comic energy she brought to such movies as Nothing Sacred (1934) and My Man Godfrey (1936) helped to make them classics. She is beloved by legions who adore her still, more than six decades after...
