For us all: who has not felt abandoned or lonely?

|
Pros: Scenery, Swedish language, boy's handsome face, peaceful 1950's life
Cons: So touching, it can affect your normally hardened heart even at work
The Bottom Line: One of the sweetest films about childhood I have ever seen, and I have seen a lot of Russian films!
Review: This film is a masterpiece in portraying life's triste moments, hard realities of adults' lives affecting their children's; the strong feelings of abandonment and loneliness children can experience so sharply; the happy moments that come between, and the...

Pros: great actors, emotional, good writing
Cons: it ended
Review: Every time I see this movie, I walk away with a different feeling on how it has made me look at my own life. This movie always stays complex in its very realistic look at the kinds of complications that life can throw at you. Faced with such tragedy it...

Pros: The cast, the story
Cons: -
Review: Wow! I have never been able to get over the way I felt after my first of many viewings of My Life as a Dog! I can watch this movie over and over and it never seems to get stale. Along with Jean de Florette and its sequel Manon des...

Pros: An honest, touching movie. It may not change your life, but you'll think about it for a long time after you watch it.
Cons: As always, people will be turned off by having to read subtitles or by listening to dubbed dialogue. But that's a necessity -- Hollywood couldn't have produced this film.
Review: The little boy (Ingemar) in this story will break your heart and also make you feel life-affirming hope. I don't think it's just the story portrayed in the film, I think it has a lot to do with the boy who plays the main character. Somehow, he manages to...

Pros: Well done, great actors
Cons: Nothing
The Bottom Line: If you haven't seen it before - do it now
Review: The movie takes place in 1959 in Sweden and two big happenings in that year was Ingemar Johansson vs. Floyd Patterson boxing match and the Russian launch of the dog Laika into outer space, both are covered in this film.

|
Pros: Nice transfer, great movie, reasonable extras
Cons: Sold at a price point normally reserved for 2-disc sets.
The Bottom Line: Surprisingly good and the DVD is worth it, especially when compared to the director's rather bad Hollywood efforts.
Review: This is a review I wrote for my site, Gamenikki.com. It is based on the Criterion DVD, due out March 25th.
There are some announcements of Criterion releases that come out of nowhere. My Life as a Dog could be considered one of them. If you... |

Pros: solid story, great direction, cast & acting
Cons: print, even on DVD sucks, as well as the sound
Review: Lasse Hallstroms My Life as a Dog is a warm, personal film that definitely has a similar feel to his other two cinematic gems, The Cider House Rules and Whats Eating Gilbert Grape.
Starring a completely Swedish cast, Dog revolves... |
