Astounding audio quality, feature laden, great value.

by   cnymike ,  Apr 13, 2005
Pros: Excellent audio quality, good battery life, user friendly
Cons: Cumbersome to enter file memos and folder names on recorder itself.
The Bottom Line: I give the DS-2 a very high recommendation. I can't imagine it being much better in any way. It has excellent audio quality and is priced very reasonably.
Review: The Olympus DS-2 Digital Voice Recorder is one of those breakthrough products that makes me want to recommend it to everyone I see. Digital voice recorders have been around for a number of years and I have owned a few, a Sony and an older Olympus ...

Sound quality can't be surpassed!

by   beth1n ,  Nov 22, 2006
Pros: Superb sound quality, easy to use, easy to use software, converts to itunes, other mp3
Cons: needs more memory or "card" storage; call the "hold" button "power;" internal speaker needs improvement
The Bottom Line: Look at your needs: great for sound quality, editing and email or mp3 interface. Not good for making many files or a lot of storage at the highest quality.
Review: I'm a vocalist and bought this unit to help learn music and hear nuances in my voice. It does not disappoint! Using both a very good quality, expensive external microphone (Sony stereo microphone for digital - ECM-DS70P) and the provided ear plugs, I ...

Excellent sound quality in a diminutive package!

by   rljackson ,  Jan 16, 2006
Pros: High quality sound, ease of use, small size
Cons: Not really any for the price
Review: I have two of these that I use to record ambient sounds and dictation for integrating into journalistic slide shows. The multiple folders also allow me to store to-do lists and maintain them even when I've downloaded one folder and deleted it from the ...

Very good quality sound

by   jbhangoo ,  Jun 27, 2006
Pros: 1. Quality of sound 2. Size 3. Convenience
Cons: 1.Windows audio format is a nuisance. 2. Requires their software.
Review: This easy to use recorder provides great audio quality. I've only ever used it with an external microphone though, so I'm not sure if it would be adequate on its own. But with the mike, I can record interviews at high enough quality to play on the ...

Good Sound. Useful Features.

by   gearguru ,  Oct 22, 2005
Pros: Stereo Sound, Level-Meters, USB, Timed Record/Alarm, USB Connectivity & Storage, Built-in Stereo Mics, Cueing
Cons: Cumbersome interface, WMA & DSS (no WAV or MP3), only 64M, battery-life not great.
The Bottom Line: Decent sounding recording. A good option for the price range. This unit will work well for voice recording and for non-critical music recording.
Review: The Olympus DS-2 has good sound, lots of features, and is solidly built. It has 64 meg of built-in memory. The sound is adequate for most needs. The interface is a bit tedious, and the WMA file format is not as convenient as wav or mp3 would have been. ...

Almost really great

by   mgshn ,  Oct 7, 2006
Pros: Sound quality and ability to easily transfer files
Cons: Their less-than-standard cable to transfer files
The Bottom Line: My third Olympus and the best (so far)
Review: I have been using Olympus digital recorders for some time. This is superior to the others in sound quality, functions, and ease of use. In particular I’m glad that Olympus has finally figured out how to treat their recorder as “memory” when ...

Wavery Sound on Playback

by   scienter ,  Sep 7, 2006
Pros: Sound quality, ease of use, battery life
Cons: Defects in playback quality
Review: I love this recorder, but mine almost immediately displayed a defect. The sound wavers, like a tape recorder whose capstans are dirty or oily. I can't imagine why a fully digital device would exhibit analog behavior, but it does. The problem doesn't seem ...

Can't be used for dictation

by   mmc05b ,  Nov 18, 2005
Pros: I can't think of anything to say about this product.
Cons: You can't use this device for dictation, even though marketed that way.
Review: I bought this recorder to replace my Sony ICD-ST25 digital recorder b/c the DS-2 had a docking station. However, it is basically only a tape recorder. It is useless for dictation. You can't "record on the fly." Which if you dictate heavily, is next ...

Better than a tape recorder for Forestry Work!!

by   oakmanfs ,  Jul 7, 2006
Pros: Speed of downloads, convenience and immediate queing with voice acivation.
Cons: File naming sucks on the recorder but fairly easy with the DSS Software
Review: As a professional forester, I have found handheld data recorders are fine for 2 man crews- if one man does nothing but input data with a plastic stylus (which is impossible to find if you drop it!). A tape recorder has always been faster, but not very ...
