Portishead Alive

by   lynus ,  Apr 18, 2004
Pros: I only have 15 words - best live album I've ever heard!
Cons: Although the best album to introduce - if you're not fan, you may not like.
The Bottom Line: Out of Lynus' limited 500 music library - this is one of his favorites (best).
Review: The biggest problem with Portishead is that they are so often misunderstood. Quite like the Cocteau Twins their music isn’t meant to exist on the normal dimension but on the explorative one. Their music draws you, their music questions you, their ...

New Reviu

by   antiokian ,  Mar 9, 2004
Pros: It's great
Cons: none whatsoever
The Bottom Line: Buy the album and get ready to be blown away
Review: Dear Epinionated, I am glad to inform you all that this album is excellent. Excellent not in a "hey, only the 11.5 people that know this band will like their music" but Gratuitously excellent: Anyone who knows or doesn't know Portishead can pick up ...

Postmodern Blues

by   tourist ,  Jul 16, 2000
Pros: A definitive moment in modern music
Cons: None
Review: Lauryn Hill plumbed the deep, rich mines of African American music--from Motown doo-wop soul to Clav-chirping ghetto funk, from old-school hip-hop to trad-reggae toasting (itself a postmodern emulation of American rock'n'roll). She then assimilated this...

Live Portishead

by   samuraidav ,  Mar 24, 2000
Pros: It's live!
Cons: Makes you want more
Review: Live production recordings are still considered rare and are often highly priced because they are most likely bootlegs. This one is made through the record company itself, and I must say the production department did an amazing job!

Portishead; Defining Modern Music

by   shubner ,  Aug 14, 2000
Pros: Amazing live music
Cons: none
Review: In brilliant fusion of Jazz infused Hip-Hop, Portishead's live PNYC album boldly goes where Trip-Hop has never gone before. In a daring live set, paced by New York's Symphony Orchestra, Portishead shines in its original style with enchanting lead...

Songs For a Successful Suicide, Vol. I

by   molotov ,  Aug 22, 2000
Pros: lush; languorous; and, at its best, transcendent
Cons: too depressing for many
Review: Excepting, perhaps, Red House Painters, there may be no band on this planet more in need of a gallon of Prozac and a couple cups of sunshine than Bristol, England’s Portishead. At the very least, these disconsolately despondent trip-hoppers’ CDs should...

It may take a while to appreciate this album

by   cannedhuman ,  Apr 19, 2001
Pros: Original sound
Cons: Some of the tracks seem a little flat (off key)
The Bottom Line: If you decide to buy this album, listen to it once. After some time has passed, listen to it again-- you might find a new appreciation for it
Review: This was an interesting compilation of songs from previous albums. Some of the songs are given new life through the orchestra's performance, however the orchestra didn't show its full potential. In my opinion, the DJ should have stuck to the basics...

Someone's been shown the money...

by   Loz ,  Feb 13, 2000
Pros: As ever, musicians at the top of their craft, but...
Cons: Why only half the show?
Review: My dislike for the album comes not from a dislike of the content, 11 haunting renditions of tracks from 'Dummy' and 'Portishead' by the full band and backed up with a string section that gives them a lusher feel without detracting from the ever-stunning...

similar to the Smiths...they repackaged the same songs...

by   Nicky1970 ,  Apr 3, 2000
Pros: its Portishead
Cons: its nothing new...songs sound the same as on other CD's
Review: I have been a fan of Portishead since about 93 or 94...and when this CD first came out, I was excited to add it to my (short) collection. When I saw it in the store, I was a little confused, because it seemed to have the same songs...but it was a live...

A Live Disappointment

by   stolenwind ,  Mar 26, 2001
Pros: Orchestral accompaniment to all of your favorite Portishead songs live
Cons: Orchestra and all of its benefits were not fully exploited.
The Bottom Line: PNYC falls short of the expectations fans may have, without a single new song (can anyone say Money Hungry?), failing to exploit the wealth of sound an orchestra can provide.
Review: Portishead's Dummy revolutionized music for me, with the sexy, mournful, trip-hop injected arrangements, and anguished vocals(which incidentally went on to define the said musical genre). Thus, it was with great anticipation that I approached this album....
