This is a keeper

by   djsimard ,  Sep 13, 2006
Pros: Full Feature, Quality HDMI video
Cons: Remote Control
The Bottom Line: The price/feature relationship cannot be beaten with unit
Review: Philips started being part of the HDMI DVD market in 2005 with the introduction of the DVP5900 player which was a failure in all. For 2006, Philips replaced it with a newer model, the DVP5960, and what a difference. I am very happy to say that they ...

Philips DVP5960 DVD Player with HDMI, Upconversion, DivX and USB

by   dkozin , lead in Electronics at Epinions.com ,  Dec 26, 2006
Pros: Price, connectivity, HDMI and upconversion, features, PAL/NTSC, computer video playback, USB
Cons: LCD and remote could be better there are better choices for straight DVD playback
The Bottom Line: If you need to play PAL discs on an NTSC TV, play computer files (including MP3, WMA, MPEG and AVI) and DivX, or play media files from a USB...
Review: I have been using the Philips DVP642 DVD player and it excelled at playing DivX, PAL, AVI and MPEG. But the remote control was horrible and the picture quality while playing store-bought DVDs was not the best. So I got the new and improved version - ...

Great HDTV picture

by   willblac ,  Jun 13, 2006
Pros: Great HDTV picture
Cons: Analog audio output muted for DTS soundtracks
The Bottom Line: Great HDTV picture. Plays it all, even damaged discs.
Review: The rumor that the new Philips DVP5960 has corrected the bugs that plagued the Philips DVP5900 upscaling DVD player appears to be true! Also, the DVP5960 produces a much better picture than the DVP5900. The DVP5960 is "DivX Ultra" certified. I've tried ...

The Good and the Bad: Fair Warning

by   thurstonx ,  Jan 2, 2006
Pros: Plays DivX-, most XviD-encoded AVIs.
HDMI with video upscaling.
Cons: HDMI and coaxial digital audio out DO NOT work together.
The Bottom Line: If you want HDMI and video upscaling, and don't care about sending digital audio to an A/V receiver, and want to play DivX AVIs, it's a good player.
Review: The DVP 5900 is definitely an upgrade to the older DVP 642, by virtue of the HDMI interface and through it the ability to upscale DVDs to 720p and 1080i. But as HDMI and upscaling is this model's big selling point, it is also its biggest stumbling block. ...

Best Philips player for the price

by   tallpaul777 ,  May 29, 2006
Pros: Great video quality, HDMI output, USB port, WMA support, Divx Ultra support, CD upsampling
Cons: USB port is 1.1, no S-video output, warranty is only 90 days
The Bottom Line: For the price, this player can't beat for playing Divx. The picture quality is much better than the DVP642
Review: If you already own the Philips DVP642 you will notice a dramatic upgrade in picture quality with this one. The DVP642 had a 10-bit 54 MHz video processor. This one has a 12-bit 108 MHz processor. I didn't notice a difference in video quality when ...

The USB feature makes it all worthwhile

by   zeet ,  May 29, 2007
Pros: Reliable. The USB port is a killer feature. Cheap!
Cons: Cheap! Very light. AWFUL remote.
The Bottom Line: If you have a XVID video library and want to hook it to your TV, this does the job and plays DVDs OK as well.
Review: As a DVD player, this unit doesn't excel. It has a small and finicky remote, slow navigation and loading, is intolerant of scratches and a terrible remote. I mention the remote twice because it really is bad. There's only a small window in which it works ...

Nice product, except for USB

by   jsevinsk ,  Mar 22, 2007
Pros: Good picture, plays DivX Ultra movies
Cons: USB only 1.1, short file names
The Bottom Line: If you're buying this for the USB port, then don't. Other than that, it's a nice player.
Review: There are a lot of players now that output 1080i. Some even support DivX. But what makes this player different is the USB port. Unfortunately, it's not very useful. The picture quality is good. It does output HDMI, component, and composite ...

Great Quality, Easy to Use

by   ricardo719 ,  Nov 7, 2006
Pros: Sleek design, well-designed and laid out remote, great viewing features.
Cons: No backlight on remote; no frame advance mode.
Review: I purchased this product to enhance viewing DVDs on my new LCD HiDef television. At first I didn't understand that I wouldn't get a high-definition experience with the player and its included cables. I was disappointed that the picture displayed much ...

A tradeoff between format compatibility and function

by   dimist ,  Feb 16, 2007
Pros: Plays virtually any format, looks nice, cheaper than other HDMI players.
Cons: Some controls are a major inconvenience
The Bottom Line: Weigh the rich features carefully over the inconvenience of operating this unit.
Review: I wholeheartedly agree with all the reviewers who prasied this player for multi-format playback, USB port, HDMI output and all of it for around $ 70. Impressive. On top of that, this unit has PAL to NTSC converter, and it is very easy to change region ...

Decent overall, terrible Xvid and MP3 support

by   four-14 ,  Apr 28, 2007
Pros: Fine vanilla DVD player, handles scratched discs OK
Cons: Xvid support terrible, mp3s must all be in one folder
The Bottom Line: Fine for basic DVD watching on my analog TV. Quirky and poorly implemented extra features.
Review: I needed a basic replacement for my Panasonic DVD player which developed a bad spindle motor. I have a plain old analog TV, so I care naught for HDTV, HDMI, upconversion. My primary requirement was for good handling of scratched discs (I visit the ...
