Basic DVD Recorder Delivers on Quality Recordings, Flexible Times and Editing

by   mediageek ,  Jan 10, 2006
Pros: High quality video in 1, 2 and 2.5 hour modes; Editing capabilities; Inputs.
Cons: No DV input, no MP3 playback.
The Bottom Line: A DVD recorder that does what it should, and well. Great quality picture, with nice editing and flexible recording times thrown in. Some have reported problems, I've had none.
Review: Introduction I bought this DVD recorder kind of on the spur of the moment. I was in Best Buy about 10 months ago after my el-cheapo DVD player died and they had the MRV640 on sale for $180, which was a good deal at the time. I decided on the spot ...

A little better upgrade

by   kcarlton ,  Jul 30, 2005
Pros: Excellent quality recording output
Cons: maintainence and upkeep
The Bottom Line: If you're addicted to the dvd technology, this is a good little machine. Just be prepared for the maintaince issues.
Review: This comes marketed under both Philips and Maganvox. If you have the chance, get it from Magnavox... Philips repair service is the pitts, but seemed like the people on the Magnavox number seemed nicer... maybe I just got lucky. Like the others ...

Piece of Garbage

by   gunukula ,  Sep 9, 2004
Pros: It does a nice recording job, even at the lowest recording speeds.
Cons: Does not play MP3s as advertised, quirk in the fast-forward function.
Review: I bought one of these. When I went to put in an MP3, it didn't work. After being on the phone with Magnavox, they told me that it had to have firmware installed and they would send me a disk. I then noticed that the 8x and 16x fast forward speed were ...

This Product Sucks, No better way to say it

by   Psyberslam ,  Jul 2, 2008
Pros: NO PROS WITH THIS PRODUCT
Cons: Product fails, Product is of inferior quality, Warrenty is not honored.
The Bottom Line: I would not recommend this product to my worst enemy on a bad day, it breaks easily, and the warranty will not be honored.
Review: This is the second product with the Magnavox name that I have owned, both a DVD recorder, and BOTH have had a number of problems, from the tray getting stuck to not playing some disks. The first one they where willing to fix 1 time on warranty, the 2nd ...

Enjoy while it lasts

by   bbegley ,  Oct 17, 2006
Pros: Seemed to record fine upon purchase. Setup was easy.
Cons: It doesn't work anymore. Clunky menu system.
Review: It worked fine for three weeks, and then started telling me that there was no disc in the drive. The next day, I got a message that said the player was "blocked" and could not eject. There is no way to get the disc out, and it will not record. In ...

started out well, but went down hill fast

by   techsanb ,  Aug 25, 2005
Pros: no pros.
Cons: unreliable, poor tech support and customer service
Review: This unit started out great, with good-quality recordings that were watchable on all my other players. But within 3 months, I was having problems - freeze-ups, losing recorded programs, not reading rented movies, etc. Tech support sent a firmware ...

Do Not Buy

by   jrb1 ,  Dec 22, 2005
Pros: Decent performance
Cons: Pray it never breaks.
Review: Absolutely the worst I've ever experienced. DVD player is only 11 days old when DVD tray fails to open. They do not allow this unit to be repaired by local authorized repair centers, so it has to be shipped to Arkansas from Michigan. I took it to the ...

The Magnavox MRV640/17 resembles a DVD Recorder but adds three undocumented features.

by   abednego ,  Jan 15, 2006
Pros: Cheap in the short term but
Cons: a risky purchase.
Review: (1) The clock loses one minute per week so you don’t have the sit through the beginnings of TV shows. (2) It records disks that inexplicably freeze-frame and jump forward when fast-forwarded on playback. (DVDs recorded on a different DVD Recorder ...

Don't buy this machine

by   sirren ,  Jan 27, 2006
Pros: cheap
Cons: unreliable, poor customer service
Review: This unit worked fine for 6-8 months when it started not recognizing blank discs. The problem worsened to the point where we could not record and it would not recognize some comercially produced media. I had Best Buy look at it for cleaning and ...
