Muskrats and Water Strider Parades and Ripples on Tinker Creek

by   pestyside ,  Jul 19, 2006
Pros: Observations, narratives, images painted by descriptions, philosophy, perspective
Cons: Not quick, easy reading, requires reflection and a pre-existing fondness for nature
The Bottom Line: If stories of sitting with Great Blue Herons or lying motionless for hours only to watch a muskrat take your breath away, then I recommend this book to you.
Review: Early in the morning, on the hundredth day of working at an outdoor camp, I sat on the end of a long dock that projected out over a cool misty Texas lake. Sipping coffee while sitting on the dock was my morning ritual. The students’ teacher had ...

A Great Read

by   aiaindiana ,  Nov 29, 2007
Pros: Interesting stories and ideas, masterful prose, beautiful imagery
Cons: Requires dedication, it is an acquired taste (in my opinion)
The Bottom Line: If you can dedicate some time to the book and are interested in the subject matter, you should give it a go.
Review: Pilgrim at Tinker Creek is a great book - the stories and ideas she presents are fascinating, and the prose is beautiful . However, unless you like nature, this book is not for the casual reader. It is a great book, but it is difficult to appreciate ...

A must-read for all journal-writers.

by   mharward1 ,  May 10, 2000
Pros: Inspiring, enlightening; helps you simply love life.
Cons: Very philosophical, so definitely not for the casual light reader.
Review: Although I'll have to agree with a previous reviewer and say that this book is for a particular audience, I still try and recommend this book to everyone that asks for my opinion on books in the hopes that that audience might grow. I, for one, certainly...

A Religious Perspective on the Natural World

by   sharuthie ,  Mar 20, 2000
Pros: Amazingly informative and uplifting
Cons: Sometimes a bit too overblown
Review: I have read many nature books, but this is the first nature book I've read by a deeply religious person. The style is somewhat over-blown and emotional, very unlike the drier style of most naturalists, but in keeping with someone who describes the...

for a select audience.

by   nids ,  Mar 11, 2000
Pros: everything, except
Cons: that it appeals to a certain audience
Review: If you can handle intense discussion of insect larva, and pupas, and such things that surround us in nature, you will enjoy this book. I am not a great fan of nonfiction, but this books proves to be an amazing journey through a womans mind. Annie Dillard...

Read this book, you might learn something

by   ObiLan ,  Mar 6, 2001
Pros: A journey through the human mind in a natural state
Cons: sleepiness may be a side-effect
The Bottom Line: Read this. It is definately worth the time. A breeze, which will leave you with time to think about what was discussed. read it!
Review: Annie Dillard’s Pilgrim at Tinker Creek is a mindless and enjoyable book... if that’s what you want it to be. Strikingly similar in purpose to Whitman’s leaves of Grass, and Song of Myself Dillard masterfully cleaves (in the joining sense) philosophy...

A brief overview of my opinion of the book

by   kayweb20 ,  Oct 5, 2006
Pros: The book is very philosophical and has a great amount of information on nature.
Cons: hard to read, boring, mind-boggling, no purpose until the end.
Review: The book shows no purpose or meaning until the end when it is all about praise and life. It goes on and on about nature and is often impossible to understand. If you are looking for an interesting attention grabbing book this is not the book for you. ...
