"I Yam What I Yam!"

by   QuinnElaine ,  Feb 14, 2008
Pros: Nostalgic, lightly entertaining, ahead of it's time!
Cons: "I got millions'o emenies. And you is 10 or 12 of 'em!"
The Bottom Line: "He's strong to the finish, 'cause he eats his spinach!"
Review: How did Popeye the Sailor become strong to the finish? Where did he come from, and what was his family like? This charming 1980 film musically explores Popeye's origins, and the quirky town of Sweet Haven with it's criminally pinioned populace. From the ...

Ray Walston is glorious!

by   Cojan1 ,  Jan 25, 2001
Pros: Great cast+great director=great movie
Cons: Musical comedies are always a tough sell
The Bottom Line: It's a classic and will be enjoyed by generations to come.
Review: This movie definitely has it's place in the annals of movie making. The great director Robert Altman really took a chance on this film and depending on who you talk to it was either a great achievement or a dismal failure.
As an actor myself I loved...

Popeye — The One-Eyed Seaman Explodes Onto the Screen

by   elvisdo ,  Aug 26, 2006
Pros: Great casting especially Williams
Cons: The sound editing could be better
The Bottom Line: Who would have thought Popeye would be a musical, but its charm works well.
Review: I sometimes wonder if Popeye ever gets any respect at all. Here is a guy who isn't blessed with good looks at all. Usually, sailors look rugged and can be somewhat handsome. Popeye is rugged, but someone steered him away from the handsome department. ...

POPEYE - He yam what he yam

by   desslok ,  Apr 24, 2008
Pros: Dead on characterization of Popeye and friends
Cons: The disc sucks for extras!
The Bottom Line: This would have been a five-star release if there was even a trailer. But since Paramount sucks, I dock it a star. The movie, on the other hand is wonderful!
Review: I love Popeye - always have. I used to run home after school to catch the shorts on afternoon television on KSTW, right after Star Blazers. Did that for years and years - so is it any wonder that I'd gravitate to the big screen version? No, not ...

"You owe me an apology."

by   HawgWyld ,  Jul 2, 2000
Pros: Great cast, good humor, nice effort meant to describe the development of Popeye
Cons: Smaller children will be bored silly
Review: This film was roundly hated by critics and failed miserably at the box office. I never figured out why, really. I saw it in the theater as a child, and rather enjoyed it. It's still one of those solid films I still enjoy today.

This film was...

Williams as Popeye... I like it

by   annbronson ,  Mar 17, 2000
Pros: Great cast that's working hard, fun set, oddball dialogue, enjoyable songs, richly detailed
Cons: slow in spots, thin comic book plot, silly special effects (though they work for a comic strip movie)
Review: There are a couple of movies that always cheer me up when I am down. Robert Altman's 1980 musical movie of POPEYE is one of them (another is THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS).

When this movie came out, it was met with a chilly response from...

Made for Robert Altman to direct

by   Kidnykid ,  Jan 17, 2000
Pros: Shelly Duvall is a real-life Olive Oyl
Cons: Not really for the small fry, despite the name and its association with the comic strip
Review: This is the type of script that Robert Altman was born to direct. There are no connections between scenes as there are in most movies. Therefore, Altman does not have to worry about making continuity errors or doing anything else wrong. (I doubt that...

Cartoons come to life!!

by   hestand ,  Jan 22, 2000
Pros: A one time must see movie, great acting
Cons: The story drags in places, little kids won't get it.
Review: The genius of Robin Williams is realized in this classic cartoon character come to life. Who but Williams could pull this off and make us believe it? And Shelly Duvall is just as dramatic as Olive Oyl.
Popeye, our hero is shipwrecked and...

Robin Williams and Shelley Duvall Bring Popeye to Life

by   dragonfire88 , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Apr 26, 2008
Pros: Perfect casting. Some entertaining moments.
Cons: Duvall's voice can be grating. Bad songs.
The Bottom Line: Popeye had some problems but it was entertaining for the most part.
Review: I watched many different cartoons when I was younger and I still watch some now. Over the years, a few of those cartoons have been turned into movies, some better than others. One of those movies that has gotten a lot of bad reviews over the years is ...

Popeye the Sailor Man, from cartoon to the big screen

by   Ronboy ,  May 11, 2000
Pros: Robin Williams and Ray Walston, musical, several funny moments
Cons: dull at times, Shelley DuVall is annoying
Review: Director Robert Altman, perhaps best known for his work on television, brings one of the most beloved cartoon characters to our homes. He realized that he would need someone that could make Popeye have that same lovable charm. Who, no other than Robin...
