A road map to Larry McMurtry's heart

by   RonFranscell ,  Sep 28, 2000
Pros: A new perspective on a great writer
Cons: Only one piece of the puzzle
Review: It's been said that the Interstate Highway System finally made it possible to travel from one coast of America to the other without seeing anything.

But "Roads," Larry McMurtry's new collection of essays, part Jack Kerouac, part...

Larry does nonfiction well, too.

by   jenzahara ,  Aug 22, 2000
Pros: descriptive and real
Cons: none
Review: I picked up this book today - and read it today. I was unable to put it down. This is a nonfiction account of 9 months last year and nine road trips the author took.

Pros: I checked it out from the library so at least it was free
Cons: free of plot, free of direction, free of meaningful insight or clever wordplay
The Bottom Line: avoid this book if at all possible; nothing of merit in it
Review: Usually I am fascinated by Larry McMurtry's novels - the characters are compelling, the plots full of twists, and, what I like best of all, he seems to have a way of finding the perfect descriptive phrase, the phrase that makes you put the book down and...
