This is the best DVD/VHS recorder/player that you can buy.

by   davcuts ,  Oct 10, 2005
Pros: Records great, plays recorded media from other players without a hitch. Easy to use.
Cons: I don't have more VHS tapes to transfer to DVD.
Review: I looked at several DVD recorders before deciding to purchase the Sony RDR-VX515. I came close to purchasing the Go Video VR5940, but after reading several reviews on reliability, I decided to go with Sony. The DVD recorder records great. Recording VHS ...

Convenient for copying old VHS to DVD

by   wtmitchell3 ,  Apr 25, 2007
Pros: Convenience in copying VHS to DVD
Cons: Very strict enforcement of copy protection
The Bottom Line: Very good for our intended use, to copy and archive old VHS tapes before they degrade further.
Review: My wife bought this product for us for Christmas, as she was tired of seeing the ever-expanding VHS collection taking over so many bookshelves. After she bought the product, I looked at the reviews here at epinions and found that several of them ...

Good Recorder

by   thesonyguy ,  Sep 7, 2005
Pros: Great inputs, great functions, great burn quality, awsome rewinding capibilities on the VHS player.
Cons: Copyright checker is a pain in the rear
Review: This Sony Vhs-Dvd recorder is a great product, while playing pretty much any disc, and having many video in connections. The quality of the burning is outstanding, depending on what you copied. However, on some VHS's, it won't let me copy them due to the ...

A GOOD but VERY Challenging novelty- Sony's RDR-VX515 DVD/VCR Recorder may save your day!

by   ASourdough4 ,  Dec 20, 2005
Pros: Excellent Playback Capabilities- Records DVD to VHS & ViceVersa, or from external video/audio sources.
Cons: A novel, very challenging device- very poorly organized user manual.
The Bottom Line: Clever design, emphasis on Copright Protection, VHS playback is good, the DVD section good for playback, easy to "Dub" VHS to DVD. Otherwise, NOT for the weak of heart.
Review: UPDATE: I have changed my mind. After successfully updating our clunky VHS Copies of "ShowBoat - 1936" and "ShowBoat -1988" movies; I am much more impressed by the utility of this type of AV Recorder. The 1936 Version came from a Turner Classic Movies ...

Not Worthy of the Sony Name

by   dgrimes ,  Aug 25, 2005
Pros: IEEE 1394 input, DVD+R Dual Layer for recording
Cons: Poor VHS playback quality
Review: I expected better out of a Sony product. The whole point of buying a DVD recorder with a VHS built in is to be able to easily transfer VHS to DVD. But the built in VHS machine is of very poor quality. The tracking must be manually adjusted to get ...

Awful DVD Recorder

by   iceman07 ,  Nov 3, 2005
Pros: DVD Recording Speeds, Modern Looking, Easy to Record VHS to DVD
Cons: Poor Picture when Recording, Fast Forward and Rewind on DVD is Slow, Highly Priced
The Bottom Line: Stay away from this Sony Recorder. If setting it up at first doesn't drive you crazy, then seeing the awful picture quality after recording something will.
Review: Don't buy this DVD/VHS Recorder. The Picture Quality when Recording from VHS to DVD is really bad on all Speeds. Also when recording DVD or VHS from TV it is very bad. My old basic DVD/VHS Combo(Toshiba non-DVD reorder) records VHS tapes with a way ...

A piece of garbage

by   kdc32 ,  Feb 19, 2007
Pros: Easy to install
Cons: Poor recording quality - if it records at all
The Bottom Line: Buy another brand - or better yet, go with a TIVO or similar device if you're looking to replace your VCR.
Review: I've had this recorder for more than a year - I should have returned it when I had the chance. It's rare when something actually records as expected, and that goes for recordings from TV and from VHS to DVD dubs. Most times, the video/audio freezes 3/4 ...

Buyer Beware

by   sunshinesmile ,  Sep 24, 2005
Pros: easy to use
Cons: bad resolution if you are planning to record your favorite shows
Review: For the price I paid, I really did expect better. The problem mainly is that the resolution doesn't seem to improve even when I changed the recording speed to the HQ! I actually had better resolution from Go-Video DVDR-VCR combo before it went kaput ...

Not Worth the Money

by   gjb49 ,  Jan 5, 2006
Pros: None
Cons: Machine stated tapes were "Protected" - they were not.
Review: We purchased this as an Open Box at Circuit City. I started to copy tapes to disk and discovered that there was severe "Blocking", i.e. pixelization - large squares of pixels that occurred with movement (looked like news interviews where the person's ...

DO NOT BUY

by   t5amigo ,  Jan 1, 2006
Pros: looks good, plenty of connections S-video output, necessary cables incl
Cons: disk finalize takes way to long, the whole setup menu is not intuitive
Review: Major problem: disk finalize takes way to much time.. It takes way to long to finalize a disk..more than 20min so far and it's still processing... Should have been finished in 5min or less.. Pioneer and Pan DVD recorder finalize in just a few ...
