Sony VRDVC20 DVDirect DVD Recorder

by   videoman22 ,  Apr 4, 2006
Pros: EASY to use
Cons: Needs RF blanket
Review: This DVD recorder works better than any on the market! I use it almost daily and burn hundreds of DVDs. It never fails. Maybe the poor reviews are the user. Also Sony has great product support on this unit and no I do NOT work for ...

Great piece of equipment.

by   prv413 ,  Feb 26, 2006
Pros: Burn video or VCR directly to DVD. Quality speed, good bundled software (Nero).
Cons: It can't do your laundry for you.
Review: I read many bad reviews on this product, and purchased it retail so that I could return it if it was not a good piece of equipment. I was incredibly surprised. I have been able to burn all kinds of data and video DVDs (I use TDK DVD+R), and have ...

Solid Unit, Works As Designed

by   apowell ,  Feb 12, 2007
Pros: Compact, efficient, does what it should, doubles as computer DVD drive!
Cons: No monitor circuit; agressive with VHS tape copy protection.
The Bottom Line: If you need what this machine does, it's a good value and will work well. Do your homework and understand what it does and does not do.
Review: I recently bought a VRD-VC20 slightly used on Ebay. It came with original packaging, software and cable, and the manual is available through Sony online. This is now an outdated unit in Sony’s line, but it can be a good value if it suits your needs. ...

SONY could have done better

by   kngsys ,  Sep 11, 2006
Pros: Good concept
Cons: Burning DVD's creates anxiety
Review: When using fire wire from my SONY DCR-HC85,(which should be compatible) the audio is out of sinc with the video, I had to resort to AV/cables. Then it was OK. When recording from my Cable box, the unit records for about 10 seconds, then stops recording ...

Kinda Works

by   mhopkins619 ,  Apr 18, 2006
Pros: Great concept
Cons: Have NOT been able to Record digital via ILink/Firewire
Review: I recorded from my digital cable box (Tivo) fine using analog inputs, but have not been able to record via I Link. The main reason I purchased this product was so I could copy my MiniDV master tapes to DVD without having to input video thru my computer. ...

Your typical Sony "over-promise and under-deliver" product

by   veryatlantic ,  Sep 20, 2007
Pros: A perfect substitute for an ordinary DVD burner you could buy for half the price.
Cons: A waste of time and money, shame on Sony!
The Bottom Line: It would be unfair to say "Boycott Sony", so I won't.
Review: I have nothing good to say about this blatant rip-off. Sony markets this as a device to burn your home movies direct to DVD. The unit does not function as Sony claims. The fact is, this product has so many anti-piracy features built-in that it ...

Poorly Conceived and Unsupported Product

by   potterj ,  Feb 14, 2006
Pros: Capable of saving data to DVDs.
Cons: Creates viable video DVDs about 50% of the time. Sony support is non-existent.
The Bottom Line: I would not buy this product unless you are a fan of frustration. The hardware is poor, the software is terrible, and the support is non-existent.
Review: This product was obviouly released long before they had the bugs worked out. The product can create a viewable DVD about half the time. The other half of the time the recording just stops for no apparent reason, the DVD produced just hangs, or the DVD ...

Sony DVDirect (VRDVC20) DVD±RW Dual Layer Burner

by   sandiego2 ,  Mar 7, 2007
Pros: Great device to create coasters for your coffee table
Cons: Avoid this thing at all costs...
Review: I bought the VRD-VC20 about one year ago. I upgraded the firmware and began recording from my TIVO, then DVR for cable box, and some home movies. The device seemed to work properly. THEN just after the warranty expired, I tried recording more home ...

Bad unsupported Product

by   raulgm ,  Jan 16, 2007
Pros: The product can only be used to copy VHS tapes.
Cons: This product is over rated and is very costly for it performances.
Review: The product that I purchased 1 week ago has given me nothing but a headache. I can only copy VHS tapes to DVD and only using Sony DVD+R, I cannot record from my Digital box or Computer. I am very disappointed in the performance of the product and Sony ...

Will not burn a viewable DVD

by   drh01 ,  Oct 22, 2005
Pros: If you want to make coasters from blank DVDs
Cons: Will not record despite multiple tries and communications with Sony
Review: I have spent many hours and blank DVDs(verbatim and TDK) trying to get this device to record a DVD. I have tried from a Sony MiniDVD camcorder and and a VCR. I had trouble finalizing on TDK DVDs. Sony recommended not to use the "sync" function. Why is it ...
