Sports Night

by   murasaki ,  Feb 3, 2003
Pros: Great writing, solid acting
Cons: No DVD extras
The Bottom Line: A fantastic show canceled well before its time.
Review: The summer I spent in Indianapolis, I went shopping during the Indy 500. Instead of watching the Super Bowl every year, I go shopping or catch a movie. During the Olympics, the events I like to watch all entail subjective judgments and therefore, in...

Sports Night: The Comedy That Was Too Good to Be Funny

by   scmrak ,  Nov 28, 2007
Pros: perhaps the best comedy you never watched
Cons: at 45 episodes and two seasons, far too short!
The Bottom Line: The one thing good about the cancellation of Sports Night in 2000 was that it gave Aaron Sorkin time to concentrate on The West Wing. Cold comfort, that.
Review: What would happen if network television were to broadcast a comedy lacking a zany neighbor, precocious pre-teen, fat husband/beautiful wife visual dissonance, or all the other sitcom tropes? Well, Aaron Sorkin tried in 1998, and the answer was, ...

Ah, for more television like this.

by   Pavel21 ,  Jun 29, 2003
Pros: The Show, including the writing, acting, and editing. NO COMMERCIALS!
Cons: No DVD extras.
The Bottom Line: This is television at its best. If you appreciate a truly well-done show, particularly in the writing department, get the box set. You won't regret it.
Review: The short-lived (45 episodes) Sports Night is available in a six-disc DVD box set. If you're ...

Aaron Sorkin's Worthwhile (And Neglected) Endeavor

by   wlswarts ,  Feb 3, 2003
Pros: Funny, Heartwarming, Great Acting, Wonderful Characters, Great Stories, Originality!
Cons: Short-lived. When "Sports Night" was scrapped, Sorkin made them into "West Wing" plots.
The Bottom Line: An amazing series that follows the exploits of professionals in the television industry as the love and grow.
Review: It's a rare thing when pretty much every critic in the world agrees on the merit of a television show. But the truth is, the universal praise "Sports Night" received in its two-year run on ABC was just that, universal. And fans of this show were a ...

A Sitcom That Takes All Ten Wickets: Sports Night (The Complete Series DVD)

by   mfunk75 , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Feb 1, 2003
Pros: Spunky acting, solid and stylish writing, authentic set, a well-developed self-awareness
Cons: It only lasted 45 episodes, the DVD is free of special features
The Bottom Line: Sorry for the length, here. I never thought I'd see Sports Night again. When I got a second chance, I got excited at the prospect of writing about it.
Review: I resent the hell out of "The West Wing".

Now, don't get me wrong. I love the show. I'm happy for its success. I'm happy that an hour-long drama that takes the American political process seriously, one that is written in an intricate style...

Quo Vadimus

by   yogore ,  Feb 24, 2003
Pros: The best show you weren't watching
Cons: You weren't watching it.
The Bottom Line: It's a show about sports. The same way Charlie's Angels was about law enforcement.
Review: "Sports Night" (approximately 17 hours, unrated, Buena Vista Home Entertainment) is a show that was damned by its own cleverness.

The name is what threw people off. "Sports Night" conjures images of ESPN's SportsCenter, and any sport...
