Steppenwolf, by Hermann Hesse

by   cdm72 ,  Oct 25, 2005
Pros: What language, and what I wouldn't give to be a writer of his caliber.
Cons: Depressing as all hell!
The Bottom Line: STEPPENWOLF is the heaviest 218 page book I've ever read with incredible imagery and many levels of meaning. I'll definitely pick a bright sunny day before I read it again.
Review: I’m not even sure where to start with this one. For only 218 pages, Hesse’s STEPPENWOLF is one HEAVY book. From the back cover: With its blend of Eastern mysticism and Western culture, Hesse’s best-known and most autobiographical work is one of ...

by   jankp ,  Feb 3, 2004
Pros: intriguing story; poetic, wise writing; characters
Cons: didn't care for Mozart's Christian belief of original sin
The Bottom Line: Solid entertainment that leaves an impression!
Review: Author's Note--This isn't actually a Dr. Freudine review since she's only in jankp's head and italicized, along with jankp's inner critic in bold print. Dr. Freudine is a psychiatrist character helping me review books and movies. I’ve just ...

Cons: The dry, academic nature of the prose makes for a more dense, less stylish read
The Bottom Line: A landmark in German literature, this text is a fabulous study of the human mind which continues to surprise with its magnificently-weaved complexity.
Review: I have often wondered just how tenuous the link between man and wolf actually is. For me, there have been several occasions when the link has been so frightening, I have spent several weeks trimming my toenails and checking my ...
