The Golden Bowl: of true love, loyalty and flaws |
|||
|
Pros: Great film for costume lovers, or those who like deep character studies.
Cons: Most of the average movie goers would not find this of interest.
The Bottom Line: Excellent adaptation of a tale of greed, lust and adultery, with sympathetic and moving characters. For those who like a well-told, mature story.
Review: I recently had the chance to sit down and watch this overlooked treasure. Pretty much forgotten by the critics and audiences alike last summer, I found this to be a very faithful adaptation of Henry James' novel of the same name. And who better to put...

THE GOLDEN BOWL Is Flawed. |
|||
|
Pros: Anjelica Huston, Nick Nolte, Jeremy Northam; Victorian steam marvels, stately English homes and Italian castles.
Cons: Uma Thurman's interpretation of Charlotte and Ruth Prawer Jhabyala's screenplay.
The Bottom Line: Despite a handsome production and some well realized elements, THE GOLDEN BOWL does not contain compelling drama, perhaps because it is too much in the style of Novelist Henry James.
Review: "Cats and Monkeys, Monkeys and Cats -- all human life is there!" So, almost uncharacteristically, effuses a character in one of Henry James's short stories. It expresses the expatriate American writer's view of life. Sometimes regarded as our greatest...

Pros: A meticulous, sumptuous Merchant-Ivory production
Cons: Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's slow-building screen play
The Bottom Line: If you like elegant soap-operas, this is a culturally captivating and visually engaging.
Review: Based on Henry James' highly complex novel, this multi-layered turn-of-the-century drams revolves around America's first billionaire Adam Verver (Nick Nolte), who is living in London and obsessed with collecting Europe's treasures to adorn the...
