A Tale Of Swords and Honor: The Last Samurai

by   JiggyJay , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Dec 18, 2003
Pros: The script, action packed, Tom Cruise, Ken Watanabe, setting and design
Cons: Ending has been done before
The Bottom Line: I saw it in theatres on opening weekend...you should see it this weekend.
Review: For as long as I can remember, I’ve been interested in Ancient Japan and the ways of the Samurai. Well, from that point on when I heard that my uncle John Logan (Gladiator, Star Trek: Nemesis, The Time Machine) was working on a movie ...

Socko's Movie Review of The Last Samurai

by   mrsocko316 ,  Dec 12, 2003
Pros: Everything except for the ending
Cons: The last five minutes try to derail the entire movie
The Bottom Line: One of the top movies of the year...you have to go see this one.
Review: OK, I'm not going to lie to you here. I was pretty disappointed with movie in general after watching Bad Boys II on Wednesday night. It was the kind of movie that makes you rethink whether you ever want to see another movie. I quickly ran out to the ...

The Last Samurai is a First in Battle

by   movie_critic , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Nov 23, 2003
Pros: epic battle scenes, great story, excellent choreography
Cons: too long, wish-washy conclusion
The Bottom Line: "The Last Samurai" is an epic action movie and Tom Cruise proves he can play with Russell Crowe and the big boys.
Review: The opening scene of Edward Zwick’s “The Last Samurai” shows us a very pathetic-looking character. He’s drunk, of course, and is degraded to the point of playing a legendary war hero in a live advertising stunt to sell guns for his ...

The Last Samurai....Lean & Mean III W/O

by   scotte1218 ,  Dec 8, 2004
Pros: Just about everything
Cons: Nothing major
The Bottom Line: Overall an excellent film. If you haven't seen it, I urge you to pick it up.
Review: I don't know about you, but I've always found it a pleasure when after watching a film you weren't very interested in, you sit back and realize that it was a great movie. Such is the case with 2003's The Last Samurai. This picture really caught ...

Similar in many ways to Dances with Wolves...only much better.

by   scott29 ,  Dec 24, 2003
Pros: Ken Watanabe and the frankly amazing action sequences.
Cons: A bit draggy, a bit familiar.
The Bottom Line: Sincere and respectful to its subject matter while delivering a rousing adventure tale...wrapped up in that comfy old Redemption Movie we all love so much.
Review: Of course the whole "stranger in a strange land who learns to embrace and eventually defend his newly adopted homeland" concept is not a particularly new or unique one. Kevin Costner won a boatload of Oscars for his politically topical "Dances with ...

Dances with Samurai

by   cynicaltwo ,  Nov 22, 2003
Pros: Excellent performance by Cruise (no, really), interesting story, amazing choreography of the battle scenes
Cons: No nudity? (But there's this one incredibly sensual scene... oh, I better not say more.)
The Bottom Line: It may share many of the same plot points as Dances with Wolves, but didn't Dances with Wolves win Best Picture and six other Oscars? I loved it.
Review: I almost didn't get to see Last Samurai this weekend. But plans changed, and I was able to get to a screening of it. And boy am I glad I did. I didn't schedule my life around the opportunity to see it because, frankly, Tom Cruise movies of late ...

For Honor and Glory: The Last Samurai.

by   talyseon ,  Mar 17, 2008
Pros: Beautiful visuals in a tight paced action drama. Great performances.
Cons: The score is totally occidental.
The Bottom Line: This will appeal on many levels; Action Flick, Historical Drama, Buddy Movie, Psychosocial commentary. All those roles, and each one well done.
Review: The Last Samurai (2003) Directed by Edward Zwick Nathan Algren (Tom Cruise) is a survivor of the Little Bighorn. He is disillusioned, depressed, and disgusted with his own culture, and its part in the genocide of the American Indian. Now a ...

Bushido Blade

by   clarkparker ,  Nov 30, 2003
Pros: pacing, sets, script, acting, battle scenes...it's a damn good movie!
Cons: the ending is a little trite. some might be put off by its length.
The Bottom Line: Everything about this film is beautiful and I would go as far as to rank it one of the year’s best films.
Review: Admittedly, I was concerned about this film beforehand. While I think Tom Cruise is one of the best mega-star actors Hollywood has to offer, I was concerned that The Last Samurai could do for him what Braveheart did for Mel Gibson and ...

My Skepticism Put to Rest: It Worked for Me

by   briankrakow ,  Dec 14, 2003
Pros: Excellent performances. Remarkable technical production. Compelling story.
Cons: The ending does not completely work.
The Bottom Line: 'The Last Samurai' is a fascinating epic with memorable characters and breathtaking action sequences.
Review: I really wasn't expecting much from this film. Despite my admiration for Zwick's previous films (particularly 'Glory' and 'Courage Under Fire') and my respect for Tom Cruise, the trailer made the film look like one big cliche. To me it looked like a ...
