A Nice Book for Kiddies (and Everyone Else)

by   angel011 ,  Jan 7, 2002
Pros: Well developed characters, interesting plot, very imaginative
Cons: Too short
The Bottom Line: "The Thief of Always" is thoroughly enjoyable book both for children and grown-ups, for everyone who enjoys the magic of childhood or wishes to be reminded of it.
Review: When I heard that Clive Barker wrote a book for children, my reaction was "Wha...What? I must see this!". The thing is, before "The Thief of Always: A Fable" I had read only "Weaveworld" and "The Books of Blood", and Barker didn’t seem to be someone who...

"Time...the subtle thief of youth..."

by   anjum_naweed ,  Sep 30, 2001
Pros: Curiously enthralling. Brilliant use of imagery and illustrations. Magical.
Cons: Who is the thief? One of the interpretations doesn't work very well.
The Bottom Line: It's a highly creative read. Although it finishes quickly, within that short time-span we feel so much and learn so much. Thought provoking in large quantities.
Review: It’s quite a strange title isn’t it? Course it is. The Thief of Always? What does that mean then? One is predisposed to imagine Always as some sort of a noun i.e. it’s the actual name for something – that would make a little bit of sense. To take...

MESMERIZING & IMPRESSIVE!

by   Giggles14227 ,  Oct 2, 2000
Pros: Very entertaining!
Cons: -
Review: Clive Barker's 'The Thieve of Always' is a mystical book for people of all ages including over 30 illustrations. Barker is at his best with his fine writing in this novel.

For well over a thousand years Mr. Hood's Holiday House has stood,...

BEST BOOK EVER!!

by   SumGirl ,  Jan 22, 2000
Pros: It's an easy and enjoyable read that keeps your attention 'til the end.
Cons: none!
Review: It starts: "The great gray beast February had eaten Harvey Swick alive. Here he was, buried in the belly of that smothering month, wondering if he would ever find his way out through the cold coils that lay between here and Easter."

The Holiday House

by   zorak163 ,  Jan 6, 2000
Pros: Wonderful Imagery
Cons: The only con is that the movie, which as been "in production" for years, has not been filmed yet.
Review: Harvey Swick is just a normal boy, so bored with "The great gray beast, February" that his sighs of boredom can be heard over a mile away. Or so says Rictus, a man who offers Harvey a trip to the Holiday House, a place where a child's dreams...

A Fable for Young and Old

by   seraphim ,  Dec 8, 1999
Pros: A great read for parents, for children, for teenagers and pretty much everyone.
Cons: You may end up reading it (like me) once a year at least.
Review: Reading to your child or younger sibling at night starting to make you hate Dick and Sue? How about Spot? Well I've got the solution for you, a children's book that is so enchantingly and hauntingly written it will amaze you, the reader while still...

The Bottom Line: Go get it now! I double dog dare you!
Review: Owe Clive, you really out done your self this time. I belive this is one of the best Fables i have ever read. It didn't take a long time, but that is ok, it just means i can read it over and over. After i read it, i gave it to my 10 year old son, and he...

Pros: Imaginative
Genius
Guarenteed to be in your top 10
Cons: None

Return To Childhood

by   Kismette ,  Jan 20, 2000
Pros: A wonderland of words!
Cons: Same story of youth and magic; Almost as if you've read it before.
Review: Every once in awhile, there comes a book that transports me back to the innocence of childhood, and stays with me forever. This book is one of them. To me, this book is portrayed through the eyes of a child, and has a mythical quality to it, as well...
