The Official Scrabble Players Dictionary: Never Start or End A Game Without It

by   Freak369 ,  Feb 13, 2008
Pros: Easy to find words, brief meanings, approved by Milton Bradley
Cons: Are you better off investing in a regular dictionary?
The Bottom Line: Never start or end a game without it.
Review: Have you ever known someone that is completely brutal when it comes to board games? They are ruthless, never bend any rule and will use the challenge option at the drop of a hat. That, in a nutshell, is Tommy. I have one of the deluxe Scrabble ...

For those who "challenge"

by   spikette83 ,  Dec 13, 2001
Pros: Extensive listing of words, shows what words are acceptable for the game
Cons: Some words strange and not included in a "regular" dictionary
The Bottom Line: A must-have for scrabble players. Clears up confusion on what is allowed, word-wise, in the game.
Review: You are playing Scrabble. Your opponent makes the word aa. You challenge, claiming it isn't a word. It is not in your average dictionary. You whip out the golden book-and low and behold, find that aa is actually a word, or at least allowable in the...

The Official SCRABBLE Players Dictionary, A "QUICKIE" Makes For a Good Score

by   popsrocks ,  Jan 4, 2007
Pros: Easy to use
Cons: Doesn't contain all words but, reasons are given in the text of this review.
The Bottom Line: This is an easy to use companion for any SCRABBLE players young and old. It is quite complete and short definitions allow more words to a page with easier viewing.
Review: Every Christmas season my wife and I make time to sit by the fireplace with the tree lights on, have a drink with refreshments and play SCRABBLE with music in the background. There was a time when I would win most games. Those days are over. It has ...

For the True Scrabble Champion.

by   Suburbia25 ,  Jun 21, 2000
Pros: It's a dictionary. That should speak for itself.
Cons: I can remember maybe twice not being able to locate a word.
Review: For those of you who have played Scrabble at some point in your lifetime, you will likely be able to relate to this situation:

There is not much space left on the board, and it is your opposition's turn. Connecting to the letter O, they spell...

If it's in there, I'm having it!

by   britguy ,  May 17, 2001
Pros: Covers about 98% of the words that you will ever see in a game
Cons: Missing a few words that should be there.
The Bottom Line: THE first reference dictionary devised specifically for the game of Scrabble. You NEED to have this book handy, every game!
Review: Scrabble between me and my Mother was a pretty one-sided contest, given that I was around 10 years old, and she in her 30's! Later on, I was able to fare better, but she held the mental edge!
Nowadays, I play against my wife, and she is the...

Scrabble Dictionary

by   kevinelliott ,  Mar 1, 2002
Pros: thousands of words needed for scrabble, also very cheap
Cons: only a few words missing
The Bottom Line: This dictionary is excellent and is also very cheap. A must have for serious scrabble players.
Review: Overview

This dictionary is the "Offical Scrabble Players Dictionary 3rd Edition". It was printed in 1996 by Merriam Webster. It includes more than 100,000 words that are acceptable in the Scrabble rules. It also provides a definition...

Pretty good... not perfect

by   jystrebler ,  Nov 2, 2001
Pros: A very handy reference. Better than a standard dictionary
Cons: Omits some OWL words. No longer has the 2 letter word page.
The Bottom Line: Perfect for recreational scrabble players. Won't become inadequat until you start trying for a rating and/or the day you try to play "fart" as a word.
Review: If you play Scrabble, you absolutely need this book.

Let's give an example: a heated, hotly contested game with my Dad and brother. I play "bendy", as in "a bendy straw". I get challenged. The dictionary in the house doesn't have it. I...

The definitive Scrabble dictionary - almost

by   watsondog ,  Jul 28, 2001
Pros: Large type, great for crosswords as well as Scrabble, hardcover edition sturdy
Cons: Paperback edition not bound very well, some words missing
The Bottom Line: It's a good value and a good dictionary, but it can't stand alone, even for Scrabble.
Review: The 3rd edition of the Official Scrabble Players Dictionary (OSPD) is a huge improvement over the 2nd edition. The typeface is larger, and the glaring typos in the 2nd edition have been fixed. The vocabulary includes both modern words and (some) Canadian...

Do You Want to Challenge My Word?

by   Writerip ,  Mar 12, 2001
Pros: Anything to do with Scrabble has to be a "pro".
Cons: There are some words that aren't found that are in fact legitimate Scrabble words.
The Bottom Line: It's great to have, as the definitions are short and to the point, however some words aren't included.
Review: I love playing Scrabble. I've played for years, and humbly admit I win a fair number of the games I play. A year ago a friend bought me the Scrabble Dictionary, which now accompanies me at these games.

The definitions are brief. This might not...
