13 Conversations About One Thing - See It, Analyze It, Then See It Again!

by   millinocket , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Nov 25, 2002
Pros: Complex and interesting stories, strong acting
Cons: timeline can get confusing
The Bottom Line: This is an intriguing and complex little film.
Review: Throughout history, in song, literature, film and innumerable other ways, mankind has continually sought for the answers to the great questions of life. Some would argue that one of the greatest of these quests is the perpetual existential search for...

More Than Words

by   snakeayez ,  Jun 16, 2002
Pros: Deeply philosophical script, intense performances, amazing all-around movie
Cons: Nothing at all
The Bottom Line: An intricate puzzle and solution, reflective of the basic human struggle to find and understand what happiness is
Review: Turn on your brains America, this will be one of the most cerebreally satisfying movies that you will ever see. Contrary to popular cinematic desire and sentiment, the “one thing” in the title is not in any way, shape or form, sexually related. Nor is...

Makes me want to work on that one thing.

by   ndoggnumber9 ,  Feb 2, 2003
Pros: Life changing, makes you stop and think.
Cons: If you have a seriously short attention span, don't watch it.
The Bottom Line: As immersive as a mindless action movie, but one that makes you want to wave at strangers.
Review: This is one of the things that irks me about not being able to get my friends to watch movies they've never heard of. As far as that goes, it irks me that some of the bigger name actors in this movie seemingly didn’t invest much time in advertising...

Thirteen Conversations, worth listening in on!

by   tfg02001 ,  Dec 9, 2002
Pros: A great story, with a unique and important idea/theme.
Cons: The DVD doesn't have the special features we want. WE WANT IT ALL!
The Bottom Line: "Thirteen Conversations About One Thing" is a brilliantly skripted, and well acted film, with a unique tone that will stick with you, and keep you thinking. A must see film.
Review: The film "Thirteen Conversations About One Thing" is one of the best stories to come out in years. The ensemble cast, including Matthew McConaughey and John Turturro, helped give depth to the thought provoking and original film by the newest female...

right, like the title said

by   voxpoptart , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Jan 19, 2003
Pros: Well-acted, superbly edited, restrained, respectful of its widely varied characters.
Cons: The ironies can be a bit bludgeoning; of course, so are real life's sometimes.
The Bottom Line: A down-to-earth philosophical movie for people who never did think ideas needed the stamp of Heidegger, Sartre, or Montel Williams to be be discussed.
Review: Thirteen Conversations does, in fact, consist essentially of conversations: short stories built on talk, linked via crucial but small actions. The One Thing they are about is happiness -- have i found it? where is it? what does it look...

Thirteen Things I Kinda Liked About the Film I only Kinda Liked.

by   ispeakup ,  Aug 24, 2002
Pros: An Interesting Puzzle of a Film.
Cons: Too Bad I Don't Care About the Big Picture.
The Bottom Line: How Do I Like The Film? Let Me Count the Ways. No -- You Can Count Them. I'm Too Confused.
Review: If I were to write this essay to mimic the style of the film, I would make every attempt to confuse you, and make you think that I am actually saying something profound. And I might very well be saying something profound, but, truthfully, I'm not sure,...

Happiness and Fate

by   lorrie1962 ,  Apr 19, 2003
Pros: A good film that makes you really think about life.
Cons: A film that's more somber than upbeat.
The Bottom Line: I recommend this film. It makes you think about life in a real way. The actors are very believable and genuine.
Review: This film could be retitled: 13 Conversations About Happiness. It deals with having happiness, keeping happiness, losing happiness, envying happiness.

There are four interconnected stories with four major characters: Troy, played by Matthew...

13 Conversations About One Thing - 2001

The Bottom Line:

"You talk too much
You worry me to death" ~

Joe Jones & Reginald Hall

Review: After reading several reviews on this release, I was totally prepared to enjoy it. Perhaps it is just me, but I didn't find this movie refreshing or innovative at all. In fact, I found it rather boring and somewhat trite. The concept was interesting, ...

Critical Eyes: Multiple Perspectives

by   deeblackthorne ,  Dec 18, 2002
Pros: vignette approach, camera conveyance of meaning, intensity and juxtaposition, philosophical thematics
Cons: questionable subplots, narrative focus (?)
The Bottom Line: I was waiting for what my roommate called the "philosophical" to show up in the film. I'm still waiting...
Review: Here's a little introductory English lesson for you. Storytellers probably have the most important job in literature: that is, to use language, grammar, and skill to pen the most exiquisite, thought out, and thorough tales. As the audience, we have...

13 Boring Conversations

by   mercury55 ,  Jul 17, 2002
Pros: Not your average movie drivel. Story is original.
Cons: The point is belabored and the characters aren't developed.
The Bottom Line: This movie tried too hard to be a cynic's version of American Beauty, and it falls flat.
Review: Given that 13 Conversations About One Thing wasn't your average summer movie blockbuster formula snore-fest, it still wasn't all that impressive to me. The "conversations" all revolve around the topic of human happiness, fulfillment, and the meaning of...
