A Very Long Engagement is an excellent love/war/mystery story

by   phungus ,  Jul 28, 2005
Pros: Amazing story
Cons: None at all
The Bottom Line: Another great film from the people who made Amelie.
Review: A Very Long Engagement is a wonderful French film that was nominated for two Academy Awards. It reunites actress Audrey Tautou with writer/director Jean-Pierre Jeunet, who worked together on the amazing Amelie. It is part war movie, part ...

Vibrance in a Muted World

by   Guildencrantz ,  Jan 9, 2005
Pros: Jeunet is a brilliant writer/director. Tautou is marvelous. Perfection in films.
Cons: I still have a special love for Amélie which eclipses even this masterpiece.
The Bottom Line: The Bottom Line is very glad it's not the Front Line, but will buy this DVD as soon as it can.
Review: A Very Long Engagement is the English title for the French film Un Long Dimanche de Fiançailles (I would be remiss if I didn't make it clear from the start that this film is in French with English subtitles). It's the tale of Mathilde ...

A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT--FALSE HOPE WILL ONLY MAKE YOU SUFFER

by   jarvococker , top reviewer in Movies at Epinions.com ,  Dec 30, 2004
Pros: Audrey Tautou; Jodie Foster; Jeunet's magnificent direction
Cons: Might be too much info to process on one viewing, particularly with subtitles to read
The Bottom Line: Jean-Pierre Jeunet's A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT is an unforgettable, heartbreaking account of love and war starring lovely Gallic muse Audrey Tautou
Review: France, World War I. January 1917. Bastoche (Jerome Kircher) is a French carpenter fighting in the chaotic trenches at the Somme Front. One of five soldiers who has intentionally or unintentionally crippled himself by shooting a bullet through his firing ...

Following Amelie Poulain

by   ALawston ,  Jul 19, 2005
Pros: Strong performances and cinematography
Cons: Occasionally clunky storytelling
The Bottom Line: This is massively entertaining and inventive, but also extremely violent.
Review: When Le Fabuleux Destin d'Amelie Poulain landed on our cinema screens in 2001, both its director and stars were heralded as triumphant newcomers. Not so. Amelie herself, Audrey Tautou, was well on her way to prominence ...

"If he were dead, I'd know it."

by   danielpar ,  Jan 18, 2007
Pros: Everything: great adaptation of a novel, brilliant mise-en-scène, outstanding casting, challenging theme.
Cons: None. Some people may be disturbed by the realism of some of the war scenes.
The Bottom Line: It's a great film. It expands the heart, enriches the soul. It will make you cry and it will make you laugh. Thank you Jean-Pierre Jeunet.
Review: A Very Long Engagement (Un long dimanche de fiançailles/2004) is Jean-Pierre Jeunet’s screen adaptation of Sebastien Japrisot's novel by the same name. Jeunet had read this magnificent novel, awarded the prestigious French ...

Jean-Pierre Jeunet, directs to seek new heights and wins!

by   doug2705eads ,  Jan 1, 2005
Pros: Photography, Tautou, director Jean-Pierre Jeunet-nothing more needs to be said.
Cons: Lots of script flying by to read, but this will make 2nd viewing more fun!
The Bottom Line: A few films will come your way so epic in nature that will gain a wide following over time, but the sub-title format will no doubt turn off many non-astute.
Review: Amelie directed by Jean-Peirre Jeunet wowed many viewers into the Faithful Following - self included. This recent epic gives you his searching for more from directing, and he goes the distance in the Arts. Though not always happy, life never ...

Entertaining on Many Levels

by   mahab ,  Jan 26, 2005
Pros: Engrossing story
Cons: Slow pacing at times
The Bottom Line: Worth seeing if you're into romance, war, or mystery. It appeals to all of those genres superbly.
Review: It had been described to me as a war epic, but the opening credits appeared to be preparing me for a horror movie. A bit over two hours later, I wasn’t sure if I couldn’t completely rule out detective story. Classifying this movie into a single genre ...

This is definitely one ENGAGEMENT you won't want to call off.

by   needtovent-com ,  Aug 24, 2008
Pros: A gem of a movie -- one of the best anti-war films ever.
Cons: Some may find the pacing a bit slow.
The Bottom Line: A VERY LONG ENGAGEMENT joins PATHS OF GLORY and JOHNNY GOT HIS GUN as one of the all-time best anti-war films ever. A must see...
Review: There are very few things in this world that are pretty much unsurpassed in the sheer beauty of their construction. One example is the Bugatti Veyron—the fastest, most powerful and most expensive street–legal production car in the world. With an ...

The dream duo from Amélie does it again

by   chiliqueen ,  Mar 22, 2007
Pros: Well-crafted fable of love in wartime, beautiful cinematography, great special effects
Cons: None.
The Bottom Line: Beautiful scenery, eye-popping visual effects, and a luminous optimism amidst of the horrors of war. Sure to delight fans of Amélie, WWI buffs, and romantics.
Review: A Very Long Engagement is based on the novel by Sébastien Japrisot, and follows a spunky Breton girl crippled by polio, Mathilde (played by the luminous Audrey Tautou from Amélie) as she searches for her fiancé, who was supposedly executed for treason ...

A mystery in an unexpected place

by   ajwilkers04 ,  Aug 30, 2005
Pros: The mystery keeps going making it hard to anticipate the next turn of events
Cons: subtitles
Review: I'll not go over the premise of the whole movie, since others have already done that. I will say that what might sound like a sappy love story turns out to be a tale of mystery and intrigue. In the end, I found myself not just wanting them to reunite ...
