VW Jetta TDi: Can Black Smoke be Green?

by   B_Campbell ,  Jul 2, 2002
Pros: Super fuel economy (40+mpg), good looks, great interior
Cons: High price, diesel fuel inconveniences
The Bottom Line: The Jetta TDi offers an extremely robust, well-rounded package, and the new 4-year bumper-to-bumper warranty is an added bonus.
Review: Fuel Economy. Two words can sum up the direction that all automakers are heading these days. While sales of gas-hungry SUV's begin to slip, new technologies are hitting the market promising greater fuel economy, which means lower emissions. Hybrid ...

Wouldn't Own Anything Else!!

by   angiet2 ,  Dec 17, 2005
Pros: Sporty, comfortable, fun
Cons: Haven't found one yet!
The Bottom Line: I absolutely love my car. When this VW finally does have to be replaced, it will be with another VW.
Review: I absolutely love my car. My husband and I bought it certified used, and purchased the extended warranty. We were expecting our first child and wanted a safe car for her. I had previously owned a New Beetle, and loved the support I got from VW. I ...

'02 TDI best yet

by   Oguard ,  Dec 5, 2002
Pros: Improved switch gear. Higher torque
Cons: Fuzz magnet upholstery.
The Bottom Line: Drive at least 50,000 km (31,000 miles) per year? The added cost of the diesel is offset by the increased fuel efficiency and lower fuel costs.
Review: This is my third Jetta TDI in the last 5 years. I put an average of 80,500 km (50,000 miles) per year and find a ready resale market for them.

The latest version has a better feel to the controls; especially the linkage of the manual...

Teens in TDI's

by   mattrj ,  May 15, 2006
Pros: MPGs, Comfort, Design, Quality, Looks, Fact that it was free(ish), Heated seats, Radio, Leather, Peppyness.
Cons: Gas station woes, The fact that there are 7 of them at my high school.
The Bottom Line: Buy it, Lease It, Steal It
Review: My 2002 was very generously given to me by my grandparents in early November of '05 and so far, it's proved itself as the best kept secret in fuel efficient cars. I average about 33 MPG's in crowded city driving with the A/C on. Inside the interior is ...

I wouldn't sell this car if you paid me $1 mil

by   urbanaddict ,  Feb 12, 2002
Pros: Excellent styling, features similar to a 3-series BMW, quick, low cost maint.
Cons: Cramped rear seating... not many others I have experienced
The Bottom Line: Buy this car. Get the 1.8T version if power is an issue. It still gets great gas mileage and I can smoke all rice rockets!
Review: Prior to the September 11th tragedies, I was in the market for a car. I have driven anything you can think of, and have owned Fords, Volvos, etc. My crappy 96 Mustang Cobra, although stylish and neck snapping fast, had finally crapped out on me. The...

UPDATE: 200-hp 24V Jetta GLX

by   jbratek ,  Jan 29, 2002
Pros: 200-hp VR6 finally gets exciting! 5-sp tiptronic transmission, ESP
Cons: Rear seat still too small, front nose/light design looks bland and outdated
The Bottom Line: You cannot find a better combination of power, quality, and technology for the money in this market segment.
Review: Note: This is an update to my original review of the current generation Jetta which was introduced in the U.S. for the 1999 model year and has remained relatively unchanged since. Please read my original review here:

2003 Jetta GL TDI

by   eschady ,  Jan 8, 2003
Pros: Fuel mileage, interior, handling
Cons: Cup holders block CD player and radio
The Bottom Line: 50 mpg and fun to drive
Review: The new TDI(turbocharged direct injection) diesels are nothing like the diesels of the past. They are quiet, clean, and efficient. The diesel mileage is excellent at 50mpg. The new TDI diesels use glow-plugs to start in the winter and generally take a...

Death trap waiting to happen!

by   jkm011 ,  Jul 8, 2003
Pros: The stylish exterior and blue/red dashboard lights. Pick-up and go with the 1.8T
Cons: Everything....read below.
The Bottom Line: Stay away. I only rated this "Excellent" so this would be read. Poor reviews are not pulled up first. Please avoid the VW Jetta

Fast and Furious 1.8T 2002 Jetta

by   tripleo ,  Jan 25, 2002
Pros: Fast (1.8T), Great factory sound system (Monsoon), Expensive Car Feel (Feels like a BMW!)
Cons: Wheel crank seat recliner, bad cup holder position, velour seats are lint magnets.
The Bottom Line: Get it. You won't be disappointed if you like a high performance car for the price of an economy car.
Review: Was shocked when I first test drove this car. The turbo really kicks in and you will never ever have any problems coming up to speed on the freeway onramps or passing cars on rural highways. I'm still too scared to see how fast it will go. Haven't even...

Love this car with the 5-speed

by   tdijetta ,  Oct 9, 2002
Pros: looks, mileage, safety, quality, handling, 5-spd manual transmission, engine
Cons: Monsoon sound system, cheap looking arm rest, rear leg room, auto tranny
The Bottom Line: Recommended, oozes quality for this class of car, Wash., D.C. to Denver with one fuel stop...wow!, avoid Monsoon sound system, 5-spd better than the auto tranny. Tops in safety.
Review: Through the first 3000 miles we have averaged 46 mpg, with a high of 51 mpg. Do not be scared away by the engines 90 hp rating, it has gobs of torque. Torque is what gets you moving, up hills, etc., think of torque as pulling power. Engine is quiet...
