Author's Review
As a teen Young and Modern was all I would read-is this a good thing?
I would say no.I can't really compare this teen magazine to any others because they're all so shallow and really don't send today's teens the right signals.
I sit here now with a recent issue and here are some tips from the cover:Boys on the Beach rate their own bods.Well, isn't that educational?
All I see in this YM is things about how to keep in shape, the hottest guys, and makeovers. No wonder girls today are so concerned about what they look like and what others think about them, almost everything is concentrating on physical appearances of either young girls or hot guys.
It also has updates on Sisq'o,yes the guy who some how made a lot of money rapping about thongs and how he likes to see your booty shake. It also has interviews from the cast of American Pie,a disgusting movie to be targeted towards teens. That was an adult movie, why don't they go ahead and interview the American Beauty cast??
American Pie was about getting sex anyway you can,and it certainly made being a virgin look like the complete wrong thing to do.
Here's a question from "Ask Anything". "My boyfriend and I recently tried dry humping. We both had our underwear on.Is there any chance I can get pregnant doing this?"
The answer YM gives doesn't even address the fact that if she's that uneducated about sex, that she shouldn't be taking these steps towards doing it.Instead of being told to make sure her jeans are fastened, better advice would have been to educate herself a little more before she does anything else. If she doesn't know whether or not she can get pregnant from dry humping, what do you think she knows about STD's,wouldn't you even doubt that she knows how to use a condom correctly?
This does scare me,because teens are being faced with a lot of sexual issues such as pregnancy and STD's,and magazines targeted towards teens should be telling them it's okay if their boyfriend is a little nerdy, and to not even waste their time with someone who pressures them into doing something they don't want to do.
Instead of making sex their top story, they should be showing teens other fun things to do and be an example that not every thing is based on sex.
Another thing is that there is not a single model in this book over a size six. In one column YM speaks of how to eat right and be healthy, never mentioning that it's okay to be big,and then doesn't have a single shot of a plus size model, surely making teens feel that they have to be thin to be in.
The horoscopes are pitiful to say the very least, and when my little girl becomes a teen, the only way she'll see this magazine will be if a friend has one,and against my rules.I want my daughter to be sure of her self and YM does not help that happen. I want her to know that she doesn't have to have sex and will probably be more respected if she doesn't.YM doesn't cover that, though. Only,"Wait until you're ready." Yea,right, like anyone in the 8 to 15 year old age group that they target is responsible enough to decide when they're ready.Teens love every guy they date (or so they believe),so YM saying to wait for the right one is so stupid.
The only plus I saw with this magazine is the section where teens speak out on having their drinks laced with the date rape drug, informing teens never to accept a drink from a stranger. Such a small good to come out of a popular magazine your teen may be getting her information from.
In my opinion,a parent should know what their teens are reading. Flip through whatever magazine is laying on their night stand, you can make your own choice on whether or not you want your teen reading it.
