Mycroft To Harry Potter's Sherlock.

by   Vormancian ,  Oct 9, 2002
Pros: Rich characters. Intelligent. Daring. Adventurous.
Cons: Subject matter, for some.
The Bottom Line: Wonderful story. Excellent characters. Daring and difficult subject matter. Inspires learning.
Review: For those not particularly in the know, Mycroft is Sherlock Holmes' smarter brother. Not only his smarter brother, but Sherlock suggests to us himself that basically Mycroft is to Sherlock as Sherlock is to 'normal people'. Mycroft is the one that...

A Treat

by   Darkmistress ,  Aug 2, 2008
Pros: Witty and engaging
Cons: None
The Bottom Line: This is an excellent choice for reluctant readers, especially boys.
Review: I had read and adored The Wish List by Eoin Colfer years ago. But never quite took a shine to the Artemis Fowl books. Well, limited reading materials making strange bedfellows again, I settled in to read the first book in the series while I was in Chile ...

A twist of magic and criminal activity

by   daddypop ,  May 22, 2002
Pros: good story line and plot, characters seem real and you can relate to them
Cons: starts out slow, need to read the first book
The Bottom Line: It is the best fantasy, criminal book I've ever read
Review: This book was a very interesting, fast-paced book that is a great sequel to the first book. It was a book that could keep you going until you finished. The only thing that might disappoint you is that the book is very similar to the first book, Artemis...

Bad guys are more fun

by   scissorgirl ,  Dec 14, 2001
Pros: Great action, interesting characters
Cons: a bit dark... this can be good, but it's not for the wee ones.
The Bottom Line: Try this because it's interesting. Try this because you're suffering Post-Harry Potter Syndrome. Just try it!
Review: As a seller of children's books, i'm highly recommending Artemis Fowl to those suffering from Post-Harry Potter Withdrawl. As a friend of mine described, "it's Harry meets Die Hard."
A 12-year old Artemis is plotting domination on a...

Second Book Better than First

by   crypticmerle ,  May 27, 2002
Pros: A good second installment with familiar characters and a completely new plot.
Cons: Some graphic (and senseless) violence.
The Bottom Line: Great second book with characters from the first. A different plot line, but just as many twists and turns.
Review: I had been disappointed with the first book because I read it with the expectation that it was "the next Harry Potter." For the second book, I went in with the expectation that it probably wouldn't be as good as the first (as sophomore efforts usually...

Demented Fantasy At Its Worst

by   Jeridyte ,  Feb 25, 2006
Pros: Extremely addictive, with good flow and development
Cons: Those Dwarves... *shudder*
The Bottom Line: This is definitely a book worth picking up. It's a gem that, like most gems, get buried amongst crap that sells on an author's name alone.
Review: I was glancing around the bookshelves looking for a nice, easy read one afternoon when I happened across a peculiar little book. It had large text, curious pictures and runes on the bottom of each page, and a cover that stood out among the drab tomes to ...

Artemis Fowl

by   mjsreveiws ,  Apr 24, 2003
Pros: You can't really have a pro for this book.
Cons: You also cannot have a con either.
The Bottom Line: I would most definitely recommend it. It has everything anyone could want. If you have any questions, email me at mspaulding@email.com
Review: This book is about a 12 year old boy who is extremely smart and rich. He lives with his mother who has gone mad when Artemis's father was killed by the Russian Mafia while he is on a barge. He also lives with his massive bodyguard, Butler and Butlers...

Magic and reality, a twist

by   daddypop ,  May 30, 2002
Pros: Almost everything
Cons: not much
The Bottom Line: Read it or die
Review: Artemis Fowl is a wonderful book that has magically real characters and some characters that are magic in themselves. I enjoyed this book because it was wonderfully written and had an amazing storyline.
The main character is a 12 year old criminal...

I'm obsessed with Artemis

by   jeremythegreat ,  May 9, 2001
Pros: It sucked me in and I couldn't put it down!
Cons: It sucked me in and I couldn't put it down, and now it's over
The Bottom Line: Entertaining and fun. One of the most addictive books I have read in a long time.
Review: I don't know exactly why but this book really sucked me in. I read it through in one day, not because I wanted to, but because I couldn't stop. And now I'm jonesing for another episode. The book is well planned out, and a joy to read. The plot is about a...
